Cloudburst’s Suzanne Marcus, Gender-Based Violence and Housing Specialist, and Ashley M., Technical Assistance Provider, joined forces this week to stand in solidarity with Health Care for the Homeless, National Health Care for the Homeless Council, National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), National Coalition for the Homeless, National Alliance to End Homelessness, and others while the Supreme Court heard opening arguments in Johnson v. Grants Pass—a case that could allow cities to criminalize unhoused people for sleeping on the streets. Homelessness has been on the rise since 2017, experiencing an overall increase of six percent. Unsheltered homelessness is also trending upwards impacting most racial, ethnic, and gender subgroups.* Resources: To learn more about Cloudburst’s work to eliminate homelessness: https://lnkd.in/gzyuXqfi To learn more about Johnson v. Did you know? 👀 Infants who experience homelessness are significantly more likely to visit the emergency department or be hospitalized by age 1 than other infants in a comparison group. Across most indicators, children who experienced homelessness as an infant were more likely to have health problems, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits than children in poverty who did not experience infant homelessness. Through the end of the study, at age 6, infants exposed to homelessness still had higher rates of asthma and used emergency departments at higher rates. Help The Haven Home combat infant homelessness! When you support our mission, you support the community. https://lnkd.in/gX2C3xWu

Our mission is to contribute positively to our community by supporting initiatives that truly make a difference. 📣Join the Movement: Sign the Petition Herts Young Homeless is currently running a crucial campaign to acquire 100,000 signatures on their petition: https://lnkd.in/exFKGpjc The campaign sheds light on a pressing issue—129,000 young people sought help for homelessness in 2021-22, and yet, there is no national plan in place. The scale of youth homelessness may go unnoticed, but the solutions are crystal clear. Young people's experiences of homelessness differ, necessitating unique strategies. At Nimbus Hosting, we advocate for a cross-departmental strategy focusing on prevention, housing, and finances to eradicate youth homelessness. 🤝 We're in this Together: A Coalition of Change As part of a coalition of over 100 youth organisations, Herts Young Homeless are collectively urging the government to commit to a comprehensive strategy to end youth homelessness. Their call for action centres around a #PlanForThe129k, emphasising the need to address the root causes of youth homelessness and provide effective solutions. 💚 How You Can Help Join us in supporting Herts Young Homeless by signing the petition and spreading awareness about the urgent need for change. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these young individuals. Thank you in advance for helping us to support this worthy cause 🙏 #Nimbus #PlanForThe129k #EndYouthHomelessness

In 2021-22, 129,000 young people experiencing homelessness approached their council for help. Yet no one is talking about this and there is no national plan to end this ahead of the General Election. This has to change. We have the power to help so many young people, and absolutely should. The scale of the issue may be unseen but the solutions are not. Young people’s experiences of homelessness are different from other age groups, so the solutions need to be different too. We know what works. That’s why we are calling for a cross-departmental strategy, prioritising prevention, housing & finances, to end youth homelessness. As a coalition of over 100 youth organisations, we’re calling on government to commit to a strategy to end youth homelessness. We need a #PlanForThe129k. https://lnkd.in/ef6JwGkc

Today for Homelessness Week, take a few minutes to watch this wonderful video from Link Wentworth and Women's Community Shelters: https://lnkd.in/gQg9pGPe It shows a snippet of the amazing impact innovative and well thought-out solutions to homelessness, like 'Meanwhile Use' accommodation, can have to help those in need, such as women and children leaving domestic violence. 'Meanwhile Use' refers to making use of properties that are underutilised or in the planning cycle to provide accommodation to those fleeing dangerous situations or needing shelter. It's putting properties that would otherwise just be sitting vacant to excellent use! 🏠 With women over 55 being the fastest growing cohort of people experiencing homelessness in Australia, Beecroft House (shown in this video) is one Meanwhile Use property that has provided much-needed shelter and care to women like Shirley. 💡 How can we tell if someone experience is going to benefit from one of our homelessness services? The strongest predictors of a positive housing outcome for people experiencing homelessness are: 📅 How long they stayed with our service, 💰 If they received brokerage – small funds of discretionary money we can use to help that person quickly with whatever they need, typically it includes things like buying a mattress, paying for new identity documents and 🤝 And how intensive the support they received. 💥Knowing what the barriers are means we can figure out ways to remove or overcome them and help more people exit homelessness. We urge you to read the new Center for Public Integrity report to learn about the struggles of Israel Cook (seen here), a 19-year-old youth who spent six years homeless, living beneath a Virginia overpass. Despite working full-time, he faces challenges in finding affordable housing and reluctance from landlords to rent to someone young without a permanent address. This situation mirrors a wider crisis of insufficient support for unaccompanied homeless youth in the U.S. With over 2.3 million young adults annually facing homelessness, the need for targeted aid is critical. Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County is here to address this issue in St. Joseph County. By connecting youth like Israel Cook to shelter, guidance, and resources to navigate challenging circumstances, we work hard to alleviate homelessness among youth in our community. YSB is a solution to a pressing need for wraparound support to end youth homelessness. Read the report online: https://lnkd.in/gVpNfydU
