The world's food system, which includes production, processing, packaging, distribution, and consumption, accounts for about a third of global emissions and accounts for about 30% of global energy consumption. About two-thirds of food system emissions come from agriculture, land use, and land use change. The number is higher for developing countries. The largest contribution to emissions comes from agriculture and land use/land use change activities, accounting for about 71% of food emissions. The remaining emissions are from retail, transportation, consumption, fuel production, waste management, industrial processes, and packaging. The research highlights how the global food system is becoming more energy intensive, reflecting trends in retail, packaging, transport, and processing, with emissions rising rapidly in some developing countries. Reducing food emissions intensity is critical to achieving the goal of a net-zero world by 2050. Our researchers are changing how the world secures future food supplies, by creating more resilient agricultural crops and developing innovative technologies for food production. Dr Helen Onyeaka, FIFST, FHEA, Deputy Director for the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability & Climate Action, is leading research on using microorganisms, like algae, to produce sustainable, resource-efficient food.
