“A major challenge for planners now is learning how to live in a process world, rather than having a single-minded focus on achieving outcomes: participating with things as they unfold, expecting to be surprised and unsettled. In a process world, sensitivity to context is everything; falling back on rote and top-down procedures or ‘best practices’ will not suffice. Process work demands presence, a quality of absolute attention in the moment to what is really happening for urban residents in the daily life of their cities and genuinely valuing their perspective. Process work is relational work. It depends on the skills of listening, conversation, participation, creativity and community-building. It depends on qualities such as caring, generosity, openness, curiosity, compassion and humility.”

Navigating Urban Planning Logistics in the Face of Severe Weather A Leadership Perspective In today's volatile climate, severe weather isn't just disrupting transportation—it’s reshaping how we approach urban and regional planning. As a leader in Urban Planning & Climate Change, I've faced these challenges head-on, developing strategies that bridge the gap between logistical complexity and community resilience. 🌩 Key Insights: - Establishing robust communication networks ensures all stakeholders—from transportation teams to local communities—are informed in real time. - Diversifying transportation options (e.g., rail, air, water) mitigates the risk when roads are impassable. - Leveraging technology like real-time tracking and predictive analytics can forecast weather patterns and reroute logistics efficiently. 🚀 Actionable Solutions: 1. Predictive Urban Design: Integrate weather analytics into planning to build resilient cities that can withstand environmental disruptions. 2. Community Involvement: Involve local communities in disaster preparedness and infrastructure planning to ensure solutions are sustainable and equitable. 3. Multi-Modal Planning: Create adaptable transportation systems that reduce reliance on a single mode, helping maintain service continuity during weather extremes. As I’ve seen in my career, leadership in urban planning requires more than technical know-how; it demands proactive thinking and a commitment to social justice. When we prioritize inclusive solutions, we build resilient systems that benefit everyone, regardless of socio-economic status. Let’s keep the conversation going—What challenges have you faced in urban logistics? Share your insights in the comments below. 🚗 Counterintuitive Urban Planning: More Roads = More Traffic? 🤔 I recently encountered a fascinating concept in city planning that challenges conventional wisdom. Building more roads doesn't always solve traffic congestion—it can actually make it worse! This phenomenon suggests that increasing road capacity often leads to increased traffic volume. As we create more car space, we inadvertently encourage more people to drive, filling up the new lanes almost as quickly as they're built. Some key takeaways: • Wider roads ≠ less congestion • Public transit and alternative transportation methods may be more effective long-term solutions • Urban planners are rethinking traditional approaches to traffic management Has anyone else encountered this concept in their work or studies? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with urban mobility solutions! #UrbanPlanning #TrafficManagement #SustainableTransport #InducedDemand --- What are your views on this? Ironically hitting my 6 year mark being a planner and 2 years (both this month) at my current org I'm in an interesting place as a planner. I've found my passion and been able to cultivate it (almost) genuinely around what I love most about urban planning. Even built a whole business and little community behind it lol. In the midst of those accomplishments, I'm actually wanting more out of myself and more out of my career. Part of this post is to say I'm looking at other ways to do the work - even if it's not under the "planning" umbrella. The other part is to say I'm spreading my wings a bit to find another organization to call "home". (and yes, my current job knows what type of time I'm on) This isn't a bad thing but a good time to refocus my 'why' and see a little bit of life outside of urban planning. Or mash a little urban planning into something else lol. Still figuring it out but excited about what's next along with figuring out what other avenues of planning I'm into. In the meantime, send me cool jobs or cool articles to read/projects to look into or keep up with the food park's next phase! 💚🏁 #urbanplanning #careerpivot #cityplanning #rebranding #newopportunities #jobhunt #worklifebalance #jobs
