Stephan Marcellus is Dayton's new Director of Recreation.
City Manager Shelley Dickstein announces the appointment of Stephan Marcellus as Director of the City of Dayton Department of Recreation. As director, Marcellus will oversee the department's facilities, operations, and staff, including 50 employees (full-time and part-time) and an annual budget of more than $2.6 million, as well as strategic planning and capital projects.
Marcellus is a 17-year City of Dayton employee, joining the City as senior recreation program coordinator and progressing to recreation division manager in 2016 and interim director in June of 2023. Before his City of Dayton career, Marcellus worked in youth and wellness programs at the Nicholas Residential Treatment Center and the YMCA of Greater Dayton. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education at Wright State University and a Master of Arts in Management at Antioch University Midwest.
The Department of Recreation operates three recreation centers (Greater Dayton, Northwest and Lohrey), as well as the Jim Nichols Tennis Complex and Kettering Field Softball Complex. Department staff members coordinate dozens of ongoing ad seasonal sports and fitness programs serving youth, adults, families, and seniors, as well as community events including the annual Lights in Flight fireworks display.
