This shouldn’t have been an issue. I don’t know how Prime Minister Orban felt entitled to go against the interests of NATO, the EU, and Ukraine. It’s hypocritical to insult the rules based liberal order, and EU meddling, but then take billions of Euros to prop up his country. It’s also hypocritical to delay NATO decisions like this, and hold back aid for Ukraine, given NATO protects Hungary from potential Russian aggression. It’s almost like Orban, and much of the Hungarian elite, forget the 45 years of Russian domination and oppression of their country in the Cold War. Now he sympathizes with Putin’s aggression over Ukraine, rather than the Ukrainians who are suffering every day? I know the EU is about concensus, and respecting every nation’s sovereignty. But maybe a small nation like Hungary, that offers NATO little military power, and represents maybe 1% of the EU’s economy, shouldn’t be undermining Ukraine, NATO, and European security. I mean no disrespect to Hungary, but politicians like Orban who play games with life and death issues like this, for the sake of petty domestic politics, belong to the ash heap of history. #nato #sweden

This significant development underscores the ongoing geopolitical shifts in Europe amidst Russia's war on Ukraine. Hungary's decision to allow Sweden to join NATO not only reflects a strengthening of the international alliance 🌍🤝 but also sends a clear message of solidarity in the face of aggression. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, such alliances become crucial for promoting stability and security.

Mr. Ivison. You may want to find General Hillier's book 'A soldier first' and give it a read. The American's are not responsible for the security of any Country but theirs. Is it in the best interested of Canada to pass on its national security to NATO? Where is the benefit of NATO to the American's now? Without the United States, does NATO even exist as a world class fighting force? https://lnkd.in/g37kMfYu

Washington has tended to value our very dear neighbor to the north as a most reliable military partner in the hemisphere. NATO is important -- critically so -- however it was not intended to operate through hardline rules of financial contribution. If any nation is going to allow independent NATO member nations to work out their spending with patience it should be the neighbor immediately to Canada's south. We enjoy a cost effective northern border with incredible trade. Only someone naive to western alliance history would hammer Ottawa on this: well can one imagine anyone looking to score political points with such stances? [remember Hungary's leader came to the United States this year but to south Florida not Washington I believe.] We should back Ottawa. We can afford to and we must! Why is this discussion even necessary in our voluntary security alliance. And further concurrently in these United States we are trying to maintain democracy and an independent judiciary. 🙃 Admiral Ron Scott KBE SOCOM, JCS, US UK Joint Services Former Advisor to White Houses Read "Canada’s NATO membership on the line as allies become ‘frustrated’ and ‘disappointed’" on SmartNews: https://lnkd.in/enpHwRFk

NATO general secretary in Sweden - Stronger and safer Three months after the Swedish Accession to NATO in March, our beloved Norwegian brother, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, visits Sweden at the Berga naval base outside Stockholm, after singing "Du Gamla Du fria", in Stockholm - the "You old and you free", the Swedish National anthem on the National Day. Everything can happen between old rivals, also our songs. We are - and remain - together! Freedom is everything we share as the Secretary remarked. As the prime ministers of two neighbouring - sister - countries - and the now Secretary General of NATO, stated in common and in common languages we all understand: Now NATO is stronger and Sweden is safer or vice versa! - ttps://youtu.be/e6hvzLL-RCE

Leave official language to the NATO Summit Declaration and the Communique. NATO’s Public Forum presentations came straight from the heart: Estonia 🇪🇪 Prime Minister Kaja Kallas “There are no first or second tier countries. If Putin attacks Estonia, he attacks NATO.” Denmark 🇩🇰 Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen “Doing the right thing is never difficult. Our entire artillary is better used in Ukraine than at home in Denmark.” 🇺🇸 Senator James Risch “NATO is formed for the exact circumstances we find ourselves in today. The war with Russia is a warmup for this century….The autocracies will not change what they think is best for their people. And democracies will not change what they think is best for their people.” Atlantic Council Atlantic Treaty Association Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Hudson Institute German Marshall Fund of the United States GLOBSEC Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) European External Action Service U.S. Department of State #natosweden #natodenmark #natoczechrepublic #nato #wearenato #natopublicforum2024 #NATOPublicForum

Joining NATO is one of the most important milestones in the Slovak modern history. The outcome of the Russian aggression against Ukraine will determine the security of Europe for the future. A new cold war with Russia is the most optimistic and stable scenario for Europe. All others are just way worse. We need a complex new policy of NATO on Russia. NATO-Russia Founding Act is frozen. But more importantly, it had died before we froze it. So by unfreezing it..... We cannot allow Ukraine to become a belt of instability at the NATO border. This is why Ukraine needs to become a member of the Transatlantic family. Anything else will be at the expense of Allied security.
🌐 Not only is it 75 years since NATO was founded, 2024 also marks the 20th anniversary of the alliance's expansion with 7 countries. Clingendael reflects on this with officials from the allies who joined in 2004. A discussion on lessons from history and new challenges for NATO. Panel guests were former NATO Secretary-General 𝗝𝗮𝗮𝗽 𝗱𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿, Baiba Braze (Ambassador-at-Large of Latvia and former NATO Assistant Secretary General), Andrej Benedejčič (Permanent Representative of Slovenia to NATO), Dan Neculăescu (Permanent Representative of Romania to NATO), Peter Bator (Permanent Representative of Slovakia to NATO), Nikolay Milkov (former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to NATO ), Zilvinas TOMKUS (Deputy Minister of Defense of Lithuania) and Anna van Zoest (Director of the Netherlands Atlantic Association). The two panels were moderated by Bob Deen (Head of the Security Unit at Clingendael) and Dick Zandee (Senior Research Fellow at Clingendael) 👉 Swipe through the images for an impression.

An important strategic message from Czech Republic President Petr Pavel. Pavel was the Chair of the #NATO Military Committee from 2015 to 2018, thus becoming the highest-ranking Czech in NATO history. Before that, he was Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army from 2012 to 2015. In 2022, he announced his presidential candidacy and became the Czech Republic’s fourth president following democratic elections in January 2023. Pavel says his country has three essential tasks ahead of them: -Immediately increase industrial production in practically all key segments of the defence industry; -Expand the real combat capability of individual European armies and, in doing so, rigorously apply the innovations and experience from Ukrainian battlefields, particularly regarding #autonomous systems; -Stand strong against the Kremlin’s information operations, which are interested in precisely the opposite outcome.
