ART AND WELLNESS FIESTA LATER THIS MONTH - The nationwide "One Nation One Project" celebration of arts and wellness is Saturday, July 27, and the Borderlands Theater is taking part in the festivities. The Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd., will feature a concert sharing of "Anita," a new musical by Borderlands about the power of joy to create a sense of home and belonging. The musical will be held from 6-8 p.m. A post-show fiesta will be held in the courtyard of the Berger Center with live music, heritage food booths, art exhibits, and interactive activities promoting the connection between arts participation and personal and collective well-being. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero will announce the winners of the "Art is Vital" art contest. CITY OF TUCSON'S 27TH ANNUAL 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS CELEBRATION - The City of Tucson this week will be presenting the 27th Annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration, thanks to the sponsorship of Desert Diamond Casino and Entertainment Group, an enterprise of the Tohono O'odham Nation. The fireworks will be launched from "A" Mountain/Sentinel Peak Park beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 4, weather permitting. The Tucson Convention Center (TCC) Parking Lot B, the large lot on the west side of the TCC with access from Cushing Street and Granada Avenue, will be open for free viewing of the show beginning at 4 p.m., with food trucks on-site and open at 7 p.m. For more information, including ADA-related accommodations at the above-listed location, call the TCC, (520) 791-4101. An additional viewing area will be available with free access at the City-State Garage, 498 W. Congress. TUCSON POLICE ASSISTANT CHIEF KEVIN HALL RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR - The George Mason University Center of Evidence-Based Crime Policy recently inducted Tucson Police Department (TPD) Assistant Chief Kevin Hall into the Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame. With 32 years of experience at TPD, Hall has spearheaded numerous research-based initiatives that have reduced crime and improved community safety. He's also the leader of a new TPD bureau dedicated to data-driven, evidence-based strategies across the organization, encompassing violent crime reduction, alternative staffing and response models, traffic safety planning, and internal assessments. CITY INITIATES OPERATION SPLASH - The City of Tucson's Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) initiated its Operation Splash campaign in an effort to protect the traveling public during storms. Crews from the DTM's Streets Maintenance Division today, June 17, began to deliver and stage barricades to hundreds of dip crossings throughout the city. During the monsoon, DTM Street Maintenance staff members are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through mid-September. As washes flood, crews will close roadways at dip crossings and washes using the more than 500 barricades placed on the side of the roadways, near the crossings. For the ninth consecutive year, DTM will assist residents concerned with flooding by offering free sandbags in the east parking lot of Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way, at Reid Park. The self-serve sandbag site will open ahead of the first predicted storm. Sand and sandbags will be provided by DTM staff, but residents should bring their own shovels. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle.
