Emergency Drills are Essential for a Safe Workplace.
Annual evacuation drills familiarize individuals with procedures, evaluate emergency plans, and allow Fire Wardens to practice training skills. Staff members also become more knowledgeable about their roles and responsibilities during emergencies.
1. Practice makes perfect!
Conducting evacuation drills is crucial. Everyone in the building should know the evacuation plan, including which staircase to use, where the fire exits are, and where to assemble. Proper training is necessary to prepare for emergencies.
2. Identify weak spots
Even if you thoroughly plan your escape from a burning building, unexpected obstacles, such as a blocked corridor or a locked door, can block your path. These hazards—or weak spots—may not be apparent until it's too late. A fire drill provides an ideal chance to review and improve safety protocols and risk assessment to prevent such scenarios from occurring during an emergency.
3. Test alarms
Testing all alarms to ensure they function properly in an emergency is essential. However, it's easy to forget to check alarms in certain areas, such as the sounder in the bathroom or visual alarm devices.
During a fire drill, the fire marshal will check every area of your premises to account for everyone. If an alarm isn't working, it will be noticeable if someone shows up late and claims they didn't hear it.
4. Fulfil your legal obligations
Regular fire drills are essential for everyone's safety and to comply with the law. Conduct at least one drill per year during working hours and inform new employees about the procedure and potential risks. Document each drill and modify the evacuation plan if needed.
5. Do you have everything you need?
It is important to note that any changes in your work environment, such as hiring more staff or altering the layout of your premises, may require a new risk assessment. This is especially necessary if there are staff members with mobility issues. In addition, conducting a new evaluation after each fire drill is recommended to ensure everyone is prepared in an emergency.
