BY CORIE BROWN | Los Angeles Times Earlier this fall, the chief executives of several local foundations gathered at the Southern California Grantmakers offices to discuss expanding their efforts to combat L.A.’s growing homelessness crisis. The featured speakers were Peter Laugharn, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, both fervent believers that homelessness in L.A. can be, “rare, brief and nonrecurring” — a catchphrase among philanthropists deeply involved in housing issues. The attendees, many of whom had to stand shoulder to shoulder along the walls in the too-small room, stayed for the entire 90-minute meeting. Wealthy L.A. philanthropists loosen grip on donations, shifting money toward social justice. “It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of the housing problem in L.A.,” says Scott Koch, executive director of Reissa Foundation, a $65-million Santa Monica-based family foundation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations. But it “fuels my optimism,” he says, to hear what’s happening on the ground to solve homelessness. Koch sees an “openness” to providing less traditional support, such as construction loan guarantees and direct investments in affordable housing. “The city wasn’t looking at this as an emergency,” said Bass. “We are now.” read the full article on LA Times Together, We Can House Hope: Be a part of the solution. OMI Cultural Participation Project is committed to artistic & cultural excellence in San Francisco District 11, and providing resources to those in need. With the high cost of living pushing many vulnerable individuals & families to the brink and onto the streets, we recognize the need for safe & secure housing, and basic necessities to help stabilize our community. As homelessness continues to rise citywide in San Francisco, and especially in our community, our goal is to create a network foundation of support and compassion with our community partners, providing hope and a new start for those who have fallen on hard times. Together we can create a ripple effect of compassion and generosity that reaches far beyond what we can imagine. By joining forces and rallying support for this cause, we're not just offering temporary relief; we're planting seeds of hope and empowerment. Every donation, no matter how big or small, has the power to transform someone's life. It's often easy to underestimate the impact of a simple act of kindness, but for someone in need, it can mean the world. Your support could provide shelter, nutrition/ meals, or essential resources that can help someone rebuild their life and regain stability. Let's come together and be the beacon of hope that lights the way for those in need.

I was on a call this week with a large nonprofit that said even the most compassionate donors and volunteers expressed a growing impatience—they want homeless people gone immediately. As visible homelessness increases, so does the flood of media coverage, intentional propaganda, and misinformation aimed at stoking public fear. This has led to a disturbing shift in public sentiment: the overwhelming desire to simply make homelessness disappear, regardless of the human cost. This is now the most significant driving force behind public attitudes toward homelessness. We have failed to properly educate the public on the realities of homelessness and the humanity of homeless people, and we are now witnessing the consequences of that failure. We continue to believe that we can change minds through statistics and empathy. It's clear we must rethink our approach to public communication. We need to critically examine what we’ve communicated in the past and why it hasn't worked. We must invest in strategies that resonate with today’s culture and effectively reach the hearts and minds of the public.

A powerful and informative video and research. Worth a watch!
The National Home Visiting Resource Center (NHVRC) has released two products highlighting the potential role of home visiting in meeting the diverse needs of unhoused families. A new brief, entitled “Home Visiting as Part of a Holistic Approach to Supporting Unhoused Families,” linked here, https://urbn.is/4apn5Vk, introduces three agencies that include home visiting as part of their comprehensive approach (New Moms, Lydia Place, Reach Dane); it also provides a statewide look at Minnesota’s collaborations with the Ojibwe Nation and various nonprofits. The brief concludes with a list of strategies for other home visiting programs to consider when serving people in similar circumstances. Their latest video, “Building on Strengths: Reaching Unhoused Families With Home Visiting Parent Support Programs,” provides a firsthand look at services delivered by Washington-based Lydia Place and the agency’s decision to incorporate home visiting to help break the cycle of homelessness. Two parents also share their experiences with the agency and how home visiting has influenced their lives. https://urbn.is/3v44H46

Veteran Housing Corp reminds you that #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!
Today, Funders Together filed an amicus brief with our partners at National Alliance to End Homelessness and Enterprise Community Partners for the Johnson v. Grants Pass case to urge #SCOTUS to protect the lives and rights of our unhoused neighbors across the country. “As institutions that invest and support proven solutions to homelessness and housing instability, philanthropy has a responsibility to also utilize its voice to protect our unhoused neighbors’ rights and lives,” said Amanda Andere, CEO of Funders Together to End Homelessness. “This brief emphasizes our organization’s and member’s unapologetic support for solutions that are rooted in humanity, choice, and the understanding that everyone deserves a safe place to call home." https://lnkd.in/gztVPRBY

There is still time to join Funders Together to End Homelessness 2024 Funders Institute Washington Hilton at Dupont Circle | July 8-9, 2024 Session Highlight: Funder Roles in Supporting Housing Justice for Native People As part of Funders Together's aspiration to be pro-Indigenous, we are connecting the dots between Native self-determination and housing justice. This session will focus on funder roles in Indigenous housing justice. We will explore what it means to "indigenize philanthropy," build authentic relationships with Native communities, and how to support Native people experiencing houselessness. Our speakers include experts on developing housing on Tribal land, working with unhoused Native people in urban areas, and Indigenous-led grantmaking. We will consider the role of land back movements, learn about housing challenges in both urban areas and Tribal land, and gain insights into Indigenous movements and Native-led solutions to housing.
