The peopling of North America pushed back to 23 Ka, 10 Ka earlier than generally interpreted. The New Mexico sand flats show unambiguous footprints. Cross-checking techniques using C14, dating of pollen and ditch grass seed in the footprint sediment matrix, and optical stimulated luminescence bring forth a very strong case for rethinking when people inhabited North America. On September 23, 1868, a historic event known as el Grito de Lares took place in Puerto Rico. This uprising, led by Ramón Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis, marked a significant moment in Puerto Rican history and the quest for independence. --- El Grito de Lares was a call for freedom and autonomy from Spanish colonial rule. Thousands of Puerto Ricans, of various backgrounds and social classes, united in their desire for self-determination. While the uprising was ultimately suppressed by Spanish forces, it served as a powerful symbol of Puerto Rico's yearning for independence. Tomorrow, el Grito de Lares is celebrated annually as a national holiday in Puerto Rico. It reminds Puerto Ricans of their enduring spirit and the ongoing struggle for political sovereignty. Puerto Rico's political status remains a complex issue, with discussions surrounding statehood, independence, or continued territorial status. As Puerto Rico's history continues to evolve, el Grito de Lares remains a symbol of resilience, unity, and the island's commitment to shaping its own destiny! Did you know that today is the Anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag? This week we’re sharing information and resources to recognise and raise awareness of the significant dates throughout National Reconciliation Week. The Torres Strait Islander flag was created by the late Bernard Namok Sr in 1992 as part of a design competition. The flag was created as a symbol of unity and identity for Torres Strait Islander peoples. The cultures and traditions of Torres Strait Islanders are strongly connected to the land, sea and sky — elements which are represented in the flag. • Green panels: represent the land • Blue panel: represent the sea • Black lines: represent the Torres Strait Islander people • White: white dhari (dancer’s headdress) which is a prominent symbol to Torres Strait Islander peoples culture, five-pointed star Underneath the Dhari headdress reflects the five island groups in the Torres Strait, navigation of the sea and peace. In 1992 the Torres Strait Islander flag was given equal prominence with the Aboriginal flag, both of which would go on to be declared as Flags of Australia under the Flags Act 1953. It's easy to fall into the trap of focusing solely on these adversities, perpetuating the "If It Bleeds, It Leads" narrative that dominates our media landscape. Indeed, even within the realm of social media and professional discourse, discussions tend to gravitate toward the negative aspects of municipal governance. Consultants tout their ability to swoop in and fix what's broken, feeding into the notion that only the problems garner attention. But perhaps it's time for a paradigm shift, a departure from the relentless spotlight on what's wrong towards a celebration of what's right."
