Today was take your kids to work day, and our office was filled with little ones all day. It was heartwarming to see them having so much fun and enjoying themselves. It made me think back to when I was a mom with a young kids, and "take your kids to work" meant school or daycare was closed, and there was no one else to look after them. So, we would head off to work together. Over the years, "take your daughter to work day" has evolved to "take your kids to work day." It has become a thing to make a great work experience for kids, inspiring them to be curious about careers and have fun. At some places I’ve worked, it even became a bit of a friendly competition to see which group could make the kids have more fun. But today, with the benefit of more time and two kids in the workforce, I think about it differently. A great career and work experience isn't just about having fun. It's about solving problems, building expertise, and being a lifelong learner. Finding your passion and letting it fuel your journey is what makes all the difference. You'll find fun along the way, but it's not the only thing that matters. I hope the kids had a great time today, and maybe they even discovered something new that piqued their interest. Let's continue to inspire the next generation to be curious about their future careers!

Hello everyone, I hope your day is going well! 💜 Exciting times are ahead for everyone with both an #invisibleillness #visibleillness or #disability I created my own business 14 years ago after being diagnosed with #crohnsdisease #ibd At the time there was no support or encouragement for people like me out there to join or continue in the workforce. Everyone has something special to offer and I cannot wait to see how this pilot program develops and progresses. To help in the development of tools to allow people to progress past entry level positions would be a huge step forward for people with invisible illness and or disability. I hope that everyone in senior positions within all businesses can see a need and fulfil it without any concerns in the near future. To include everyone that takes an interest in what their business offers irrespective of their setbacks whether physical, mental or both. Thank you to AND and all the employers and funding organisations involved in making this important step forward. Enjoy the rest of your day everyone! #inclusion #inclusionmatters #inclusionanddiversity #invisibleillness #invisibledisability #disability #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness

In addition to the lives lost that day, someone else is on my mind today - my intern. Like most of you, I remember 9/11 as clear as day. It fundamentally altered the course of our lives for decades to come, shaping national security and the professional trajectories of all of those who wanted to serve the country that had given so much to us. When the fantastic new intern started, I showed him the 9/11 Memorial Chapel in the Pentagon. I like going down there to get away from the noise of the building and reflect, honor, and remember. It didn't occur to me until that moment that this young man likely didn't remember 9/11 at all, if he were even alive for it. I hadn't thought much about it but it seems obvious now - we are now in an era in which an entire generation of professionals entering the workforce have no memory of or little, if any, connection to 9/11. This isn't a negative, of course. There were plenty of historical events that we all missed before our birth. But it is different. We now have a generation of workforce members with different motivations than we had. They have different perspectives, realities, and narratives than we had. It’s not unlike this photo of One World Trade I took in NYC last weekend. I remember what the skyline looked like. But there’s now an entire generation who never saw what used to stand here so proudly. How can we get through to a new generation who did not live through 9/11, but grew up in its aftermath? How can we help them understand the significance of an event they didn't experience? How can we ensure that subsequent generations honor and reflect on the events of a day they did not witness? How do we get them to see beyond the platitudes of #NeverForget surrounding an event they don't remember in the first place? It's up to us to ensure we carry that torch forward while we welcome a new generation of national security professionals.
