Through Chi Device Donation Month, the City encourages organizations to donate old or retired computers and laptops. Take it from Shedd Aquarium, a long-time donor of its devices: “Something as simple as providing used technology equipment to be refurbished means that more individuals and families will obtain the digital tools needed to succeed in the 21st century.” Learn more and donate devices at chi.gov/DeviceDonation

Dollar Energy assists households in financial need to pay their basic utility bills through grants. The Challenge: Their current site was difficult to maintain and performed poorly on mobile devices. With the majority of applicants accessing the website with a mobile device, this was a huge issue. To advance their noble cause, they required a user-friendly website catering to those seeking assistance and potential donors. The Solution: For Dollar Energy’s redesign, we focused on: – Implementing donation tracking via analytics. – Using upbeat imagery for a welcoming atmosphere. – Organizing the site for easy access to actions and resources. We need your old laptops! Are you looking to replace your laptops but are concerned about the old ones going to landfill? Do you have old, unused and unwanted laptops lying around that you want to see the back of? The Warren’s Tekatak Project can help, and you can help us do good things by donating them! We have been awarded a share of £500,000 to run an innovative eco project in Hull to help tackle electronic waste and to support devices being used again and again. This will support a two-year project to help young people learn how to repair and upgrade laptops, thus preventing e-waste, and giving them essential practical and digital skills. Young people will be given the laptop to keep when they complete the programme. The project has 3 aims: freeing up old, unused and unloved tech to give it a new lease of life and address the growing e-waste problem; bridging the digital skills divide by teaching young people essential practical digital skills; and tackling digital access inequalities by giving them a laptop and internet connectivity, which allows them to more fully participate in our digital society. We aim to upskill as many young people as we can during the 2-year project, but we need donations of laptops to help us do this. If you’ve got a laptop gathering dust in a cupboard, or you’re refreshing your laptop inventory, you can help. Of course, we would prefer devices that are working, but even if they aren’t we can probably re-use most of the parts. You can do your bit to help by calling us on 01482 218115 or emailing us at [email protected]. Or you can click this link: https://lnkd.in/efTg8TM6 and complete our online form. We will give your old device a good home and stop it becoming part of the ever-growing mountain of e-waste. Data will be wiped to HM Government standards.

Fast Tracking "Old" Laptops to Those In Need Almost 90% of Australia’s four million computers will end up in landfill, often still in working order. After more than a year of bloody hard work, my friend, Cheryl Sing, is launching her new charity, tonight, that aims to tackle this ridiculous example of waste. The Laptop Initiative takes redundant laptops from companies, and then pairs them with charities whose clients are: kids who's parents can't afford a computer; women escaping family violence who left their homes with little but a bag of clothes and their children; or newly arrived refugees who desperately need a computer to navigate their new home. Yes, there are loads of charities out there that refurbish computers that are no longer needed, but The Laptop Initiative resonates with me - because it literally gets companies to wipe and sanitize their computers (which are often just destroyed, via a drill through the hard-drive, after a certain number of years regardless of whether they work or not) and they are then taken directly to the charities. No storage, no delays, just finding who needs some pre-loved laptops and getting them there, generally within days if not hours of picking them up. Less than 1% of laptops are recycled Australia wide. One. Percent! and there is such a need.... a recent report by KPMG found that 84% of Australian students do not have access to computers out of school which means they behind in assignments and learning. The Laptop Initiative's aim is to simply redirect perfectly good laptops being discarded by corporate Australia to where they can be - immediately - of use. Its grassroots philanthropy at its best. https://lnkd.in/gHzuRuN7
