The San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control (SFACC) is a taxpayer-funded, open-admission animal shelter. Since 1989, SFACC has provided housing, care, and medical treatment to wild, exotic and domestic stray, lost, abandoned, sick, injured, and surrendered animals. SFACC’s doors are open to all animals in need regardless of species, medical, or behavioral condition. The shelter also enforces all state and local Animal Control and Welfare laws and is the first responder for animals in natural disasters and citizen emergencies. https://lnkd.in/gkcxF67b

How do we get every shelter and rescue to work together to achieve the best outcome for every animal in its care and in the community? Through Socially Conscious Sheltering (SCS)! Driven by compassion, transparency, and leadership, Socially Conscious Animal Communities (SCAC) recognize the power of working together. While the cornerstone of SCAC is Socially Conscious Sheltering, companion animals thrive when people from all walks of life lend their knowledge and experience to supporting animal welfare, nurturing the human-animal bond and fostering safe, inclusive, and humane communities. The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement has taken on this initiative and SCAC has become an international model of best practice and success. SCS takes the arbitrary numbers out of the equation so that you can focus on what really matters- the people and animals in your community. Shelters across the nation have joined this initiative and have committed to supporting each other with a set of shared values and tenants. Interested in learning more or joining? "Witnessing suffering on a daily basis can lead to profound emotional exhaustion" ❤️ Compassion fatigue "refers to the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of helping others, often leading to a state of emotional depletion" ❤️ Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) "refers to the emotional anguish resulting from witnessing or hearing about – often repeatedly – the trauma of an animal" ❤️ "Trauma resulting from being exposed to animal abuse, neglect, abandonment, and suffering can also lead to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)" "Understanding and addressing compassion fatigue, STS and PTSD is vital to sustaining a career (or volunteer role) in animal welfare. These emotional and psychological challenges are not signs of weakness but rather natural responses to the difficult work you do every day" - Jen Blough, counsellor & animal advocate #animals #animalwelfare #animalcruelty #animaladvocacy #sustainableadvocacy #OneWelfare #OneHealth #mentalhealth #MentalHealthMatters #PTSD #STS #compassionfatigue #trauma

Planning can be the key to success - no matter if it's a law enforcement agency preparing for active shooter situations or an animal shelter preparing for fire season and evacuation orders. That's why we just loved this sentiment Angelina Martin shared during her webinar, Social Media Marketing Strategies for Animal Shelters. 👉Check out all of our Animal Welfare webinars Here. https://lnkd.in/g-YVqqVD #animalwelfare #planning #disasterpreparedness
