The buying journey for furniture shoppers has changed over the years. Shoppers check review sites, talk to friends and family, research online and come in to the store to "test it out." In some cases, this increases the time from awareness and consideration stages to the final purchase: "The Provoke Insights Summer 2024 survey, conducted in conjunction with Furniture Today, shows that 60% of consumers who recently purchased a new furniture item extended that buying process over several days or weeks, with another 19% acknowledging it was a months-long endeavor. Attractive Retailing: A visit to Crate & Barrel in the Flatiron District, NYC The store is in a prime location. It is built inside a late 19th/early 20th century classic, charming building. The store is spacious and well lit. ten to twelve classic Corinthian-style columns from the original building sustain white, 25ft ceilings. The whole them if the store is white. Of interest, is that there are no walls or high shelves inside the four outside walls of the store. Customers can see the entire store at a glance, from a single lace. Merchandise is smartly displayed no higher than table height except of the outside walls which are completely shelved and hold kitchenware and gadgets. An inside staircase built for this store leads to the downstairs, formerly a storage basement, which now holds the furniture department. Again one can see almost the entire store from one place. the store is neatly arranged and inviting. I went to see what had already been touted and I was impressed. This is how retailing should be done. This Crate & Barrel is the home products equivalent of a candy store...buy, buy, buy.

This has been on my radar for 18 months, apartment building is going crazy, trying to keep up with the demand. The lack of affordable housing is pushing GenZ and Millennials into apartments. Apartments set a 50 year record in construction last year. 1.2 million units were built during the pandemic, another million are coming onboard before 2025! Opportunity? Following its launch into soft furnishings earlier in the year, Banana Republic has now pushed firmly into the home space with a full launch of its BR Home range. The assortment spans all areas of home, including bedroom, living, dining, and bath. The emphasis is on quality materials and craftsmanship, with designs inspired by global artisans. There is no denying that the range is nicely put together, nor that the products are very stylish, nor that they are of good quality. However, the prices are very high. Take beds, for example. The lowest price at BR Home is $2,850. At RH beds start at $1,995, and a similar model to the one at BR Home is $2,095. At Crate and Barrel, a similar bed costs $1,699. Shopping at West Elm would set you back $1,599. The pattern repeats itself over and over. A basic rectangular dining table at BR Home costs $1,950. An almost identical item at Crate & Barrel is $1,699. BR has no heritage or pedigree in home. At present, aside from two pop-up shops and plans to stock a very limited range in a handful of stores, it has no real physical presence. This begs a big question around how it will justify its much higher price points. In my view, RH plus prices with Wayfair like online ordering isn’t going to cut the mustard, not in a market where most of the other premium players have physical spaces and note their importance in driving sales and brand loyalty. #retail #retailnews #furniture
