My take on the The Wall Street Journal article is certainly more from the perspective of the multi-brand / department store retailers who have used #marketplaces & concession models to expand their assortments with assumed low risk (versus traditional wholesale buying). However, consumers are lost in the vast array of products; overwhelmed by choice (ie, Netflix) Assortments are no longer curated, localized, edited down. There’s no strategy, no story. When a retailer tries to appeal to everyone, they appeal to no one. There needs to be a return to smart buying and curated assortments. Less can be more.

One of the most important roles of a #retailer or #brand is to curate an assortment of goods and services that reinforces its brand positioning. There's no blanket rule on whether to have more vs. less choice; it's really what makes the most sense for your brand, your customers / consumers, and your business. "Pruning the garden to let the better plants grow" (aka assortment editing) is an important activity for every brand. So is having a pipeline of new / innovative products that create excitement and encourage consumers to try / buy. Finding the balance, knowing where to place bets., and having the discipline not to sway too far in either direction are some of the toughest challenges of the senior executive team. Macy's president and CEO-elect Tony Spring may be right when he told analysts that “the customer today does not want an endless aisle; they want the best aisle.” The focus should be on "variety vs. redundancy." And for most retailers, it also depends on what products you make, buy, and stock yourself vs. what you offer via a #marketplace of third-party sellers. From what I've seen over the past few years, larger brands have been much more focused on the pruning than on the pipeline, which has created opportunities for smaller brands to fill the void. https://lnkd.in/eFy8BgFg

As the ghosts and goblins make their return this fall, welcome Spirit Halloween, the retail industry's all-time biggest pop-up operation, and 𝗧𝗥𝗥'𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸. Always ahead of time, it started opening more than 1,500 locations (a record) this week with some 50,000 employees. They will operate for about 90 days, and then get all packed up overnight until next year, same time... often in the same place at roadside and empty storefront locations. It's a remarkable achievement for privately held parent company, Spencer Spirit Holdings Inc., which operates over 600 year-round, namesake gift specialty stores in the U.S. and Canada offering hot-topic novelty gifts. In an era when most retailers struggle to open a few dozen stores a year, Spencer makes it look easy. Retail businesses of ANY size could benefit hugely from a concept like this. An external perspective on what makes good merchandising can only be a benefit to your business. Macy's has never been a retailer without plans. Under both Terry Lundgren and Jeff Gennette there were plenty of initiatives. The problem was that very few of the ideas were executed well. Some, like Story, amounted to nothing. Meanwhile, the basics - those 101 retail fundamentals - were often neglected. So when Tony Spring recently took up the post of CEO, he inherited a retailer in need of change. Now to be fair, Tony has been quick to set out his stall - and high on the agenda is the improvement of Macy’s shops. Not just the way they look, but how ranges are curates, and how the stores operate. Macy’s will update 350 of its shops - the so called Go Forward group, which it sees as the future of the chain. Work has already started across 50 stores - known as the First 50. Today I am meeting Tony Spring and his colleagues to walk one or these modernized stores. I have been a critic of Macy’s store standards, so I am looking forward to seeing what the business is doing to put its best foot forward as it crafts what it is calling a “Bold New Chapter”. #retail #retailnews #departmentstores
