#NursingNews: Nurses in Michigan have reported an improvement in working conditions, and fewer expressed interest in leaving the profession. Still — abuse, planned departure rates, and unsafe working conditions remained at high levels, according to a new study. “Changes in Registered Nurse Employment Plans and Workplace Assessments,” published July 18 in JAMA Network Open, compared results of the 2022 and 2023 Michigan Nurses’ Study. What do you think? What has been your experience? In all honesty, I did experience some challenges in staff attitudes when I was a nursing student but overall it was a pretty positive experience. I do believe there are elements of responsibility and accountability on both sides of the experience, with nursing students not always willing or open to learning. I remember some of my earlier students saying to me that “I’m going to be an RN so I don’t make beds” - you can well imagine how that went down! Students need to show up and be prepared to learn from both staff, patients and relatives - there is much to learn. Ultimately, we should be concerning ourselves with demonstrating the same attitudes and behaviours towards nursing students that is becoming of our profession. This needs to be inclusive of ceasing and to indirectly consider them in the numbers, provide dynamic opportunities for learning, and maintaining our own skills and understanding of knowledge sharing to get the best learning outcome. After all, they are our colleagues, present and future. #nursing #nursingstudent #nursingeducation #nursingplacement
