What concerns you about your career? I have been listening to Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway for some time and even though I have transitioned from CIO to CEO I am still very interested in what is happening in the tech world. How could I not be, with all the fascinating changes taking place. In their latest episode they discuss “Will Meta and Microsoft’s AI investments Pay Off?” What really stood out for me were the comments around a critical shift in computing with all big tech companies going all in on AI spend leveraging their capital advantage. However, the one comment that really made an impression was the recommendation to smaller companies to cease spending capital on the AI bandwagon and to rent AI. Cease creating your own LLM’s (large language models) and rent others. This way you can truly capitalise on AI without the huge costs associated with it. As companies both large and small are jumping in, I am curious what this will do to the job market. When considering a career pivot what do you think AI will do to your prospects? Is this an area you are concerned about? From my perspective I have always remained open minded and curios about what will happen in technology. With one major change, a lot of opportunity can arise. For me as I am used to extreme career pivots, I think about this from a different perspective. I do not see these changes through a lens of fear but rather through a lens of possibility. If you are seeking a career pivot, it is important to know what brings you joy in your work and focus on building a career with this in mind. Every choice should be made with this as an underpinning tenant, then you can always be certain to not fear change but embrace it. Are you concerned about the future? I suspect that a lot of people in technical roles agonise over taking on management responsibilities, and whether avoiding them will eventually be career-limiting. You'll also probably be told from early on in your career that there's a difference between managing and leading, and that you can lead without having direct reports - but what does that mean in practice? I like this podcast episode from the FT because it gives a balanced and insightful overview of the continuum of roles that exist between individual contributor and large-scale people leader.
