Today marks my 4-year journey with Walmart Global Tech, and I am feeling truly blessed and deeply grateful. Being a part of the Talent Acquisitions team here has been an enriching experience, as I've had the opportunity to support diverse business groups such as Health & Wellness Technologies, Data Ventures, Retail Technologies, Search and Personalization, Technical Program Management, Information Security, and International Ecommerce, among others. What sets Walmart apart is its steadfast commitment to doing what's right. The company's core values - Service to the customer, Respect for the individual, Strive for excellence, and Act with integrity - are not just words on a page. They are lived by every day, in every action we take. Working here isn't just about being part of a company. It's about being part of a culture that truly cares. A culture that you don't just see, but feel at every moment. Today marks 16 years with Walmart, not a normal milestone but it has been half of my life! It’s been such an amazing ride that has almost come to end quite a few times over the years, and I can’t imagine what life would be like had that happened. There are a lot of friends that I have made over the years, a lot of people that I spent time in trenches with that I no longer talk with. There are a couple of things that they have left me with though: 1.      The reason we’re here is to support a life away from here. While I’m one of the biggest customer advocates you will find, every associate has a family, school, a vacation around the corner that they show up to support. Take interest in the reason that people work alongside you. 2.      The time that we spend here can either be the worst time and moments in our day/week/month, or it can be some of the best times we’ve had. Looking back, I realize that how I show up for the day dictates how the time progresses. I spent my entire 2 years as an Assistant Manager in the store answering the question “How are you?” with “Amazing”, and while they were some of the hardest times of my career, every second was amazing. 3.      The opportunities in life (for me that is at Walmart 😊) are endless and will never cease to surprise you. Through so many unforeseen circumstances I’m in my seat today. I happened to apply for a transfer to the wrong store in Colorado when moving from Wyoming and ended up meeting my wife at that wrong store. I applied for an Assistant Manager role at one of the toughest stores in Denver not realizing how tough it would be. That store ended up piloting Walmart Online Pickup and Delivery program (shoutout GHS crew!). I rolled the dice on travelling for work and missing my best friend’s wedding (she has since forgiven me) which lead me down the path of getting my first home office role. Opportunity almost always comes in the face of change and challenges, don’t ignore them If you’re ever wondering if Walmart is a good place to work, This is That Place! Make the most of where you are at, own the role that you have, people notice and will show out for you. Today, someone asked me about work and asked if the job change made me happy. I looked the asker in the face and blankly said, “honestly, I don’t know.” You see, early in my career at Walmart, I was a single mom with full financial responsibility for my two amazing daughters. I was determined to find a way to give my ladybugs the freedom to take advantage of any of the amazing opportunities our community offers to kiddos. But that meant I needed to learn how to advance and excel at work so I could make more money. I quickly learned the behaviors Walmart appreciated in its Associates and began mastering each (as if my life depended on it) which led to 5 promotions in 6 years. I was proud of what I was able to do in my career and for my kiddos. What I didn’t realize is that my approach and my hustle had led to Assimilation. “Assimilation is the process through which individuals or groups adopt the cultural norms, values, and behaviors of another group, often leading to the gradual loss of their original cultural identity.” The realization about knocked me over when I finally realized that my identity (safety, friendship, love, belonging, esteem, and potential) were all tied up in Walmart. The sad and scary truth was, I had no idea who I was without Fortune One. So, I held my breath, closed my eyes and courageously quit my job and found a new one the same day. I spend a lot of time uncomfortable now, because I’m figuring out who I am as “Mariah Freaking Newman” and I don’t have Walmart or Walmart expectations to hide behind. People are often surprised when they learn I have worked for Walmart close to 30 years and now Fortune is helping me share the WHY! The People-first and family culture was (and still is!) a magnet for me and the way I wanted to live and work! Has it been hard at times? YES! Have there been tears of frustration at times? SURE! Did I sometimes work so many hours that a 40hr / week job would have felt like part-time work? NO DOUBT! But........ Has it also been fun, fulfilling and everything I hoped it would be? YES! This is my Walmart story, marking my 2.5-year milestone. I joined Walmart as a part-time associate in 2017, shortly after immigrating to Canada. Hailing from a small town with limited job opportunities, getting a position at Walmart was a stroke of luck amidst uncertainty. My journey has been one of profound growth and transformation. Over the years, amidst life's ups and downs, in 2021, I found myself drawn back to Walmart, where I embarked on a career journey filled with diverse experiences and invaluable lessons. From the front end to Omni, fresh to general merchandise, fashion to core grocery, I've traversed nearly every department, gaining a comprehensive understanding of Walmart's retail environment. Beyond the confines of a typical store, I've embraced unique challenges such as driving the forklift to move freights or empty containers—a task that both fascinated and enriched my skill set. Grateful for the opportunity presented to me the day I applied to Walmart, I've encountered many great people and learned from them (both knowledge and mindset), fostering a sense of belonging within the Walmart community. As I continue along this path, I remain committed to learning and growing, both personally and professionally. Each day brings new opportunities for development, and I eagerly embrace them with gratitude and determination. Last March, I was humbly nominated for “Shining Star of the Month”—just a small achievement that I've gained. But I consider this experience one of the greatest milestones in my career journey because it signifies that my dedication is heard and seen. As someone once said, “JOBs can be TAUGHT. SKILLS can be TAUGHT. EXPERIENCE comes from OPPORTUNITY. Start giving people an OPPORTUNITY to learn the SKILLS to gain EXPERIENCE to do the JOB." Today, I'm highlighting one of the newest members of our Walmart Health central operations team. If you were to ask people how long Margaret Downs has been part of the Walmart Health team, they would likely say that she's been with us for years. That's because in the short 11 months that Margaret has been with us, she has made many years worth of impact. I am proud to say I was part of the hiring team that brought Margaret to Walmart. It is unequivocally one of the best hiring decisions I have ever been a part of . Margaret is wicked smart. She is a quick learner. She is tenacious. She will does not accept failure as an option. She is everything that you want in a strategic or tactical leader. We hired Margaret to help drive success in our new sites. That said, as we were in a lull between last year's site launches and this year's, we gave Margaret other work to do. It did not matter if we asked her to lead a project team, or tackle a complex business case analysis, Margaret rose the challenge. Margaret once told me that she applied for 41 positions at Walmart before we hired her. To that, I saw 41 Walmart hiring managers' losses were our gain. As Margaret looks for what's next, I say to my Walmart colleagues, DO NOT BE THE NEXT LEADER who passes of the opportunity to keep Margaret Downs in the family. If you're not a Walmart leader, this is talent you should strongly consider adding to your organization. I don't know what the future hold for me, but the one thing I know for certain is that if I have opportunity to bring Margaret Downs along, I absolutely will. Good luck being the person that beats me to the punch!!

I must first humbly apologize, offering a sincere 'mea culpa' to those who've reached out to congratulate me on my two-year anniversary at Walmart Global Tech and haven’t received a response. The culprit, in this case, is the slightly overzealous LinkedIn system that begins to celebrate the milestone a good 2 weeks before the actual date. "525,600 minutes…how do you measure a year in the life?" A question posed by the hit Broadway musical Rent, and one that seems fitting as I reflect on the past two years at Walmart. Do we measure it in daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, or cups of coffee? Or perhaps in terms of the reqs filled, trackers populated, new ways of working adapted, and new stakeholders met? The past year has been one wild ride. I've been in the thick of things, supporting Marketing & Advertising Technology, Health & Wellness, Data Ventures, New Ventures, and now OMNI & Marketplace Acceleration. Each new role, each business has been a learning curve, an occasion to broaden my horizons, and an invitation to contribute to the company's growth. This journey has led me cross-country, from the bustling streets of Washington DC, to the vibrant energy of Hoboken, and the heartland of Bentonville. I've met and worked with some amazing people from all walks of life, their stories and experiences adding new flavors to my work. Looking back, these 525,600 minutes have been filled with countless invaluable experiences, challenges that turned into opportunities, and most importantly, connections that transformed into friendships. As I embark on Year 3 of my Walmart journey, I am reminded of a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson - "Life is a journey, not a destination." Here's to the journey, the adventure, and the countless minutes to come.
