Thierry Delaporte has stepped down from the Wipro CEO position. Srini Pallia, head of Americas 1, succeeds him. Delaporte stays until the end of May. Pallia will be based in New Jersey. Several thoughts: ● Delaporte leaves after four years at the helm. During his tenure, Wipro increased its focus on large deals (over $30m), large accounts, the company's cost structure and labor pyramid, and innovation (e.g., #GenAI) ● Importantly, Delaporte had made a bold move by transitioning Wipro to a geography-based GTM, whereas most tier-one competitors have a vertical GTM ● In the past quarters, Wipro had a growth lower than peers, due to its higher discretionary spending-based profile (resulting from its historic lack of large deals), and its Capco acquisition impacted by the current spending decline in consulting and financial services. Also, analysts questioned why Wipro's high bookings did not convert more quickly into revenues ● Pallia ran Americas 1, which had the more resilient business (telecom ME, CPG and retail, healthcare & medical devices, transportation) and, therefore, has a better performance than Americas 2 (BFSI, high-tech, E&U), and a good track record. Wipro gets a new CEO There is change of guard at Wipro at a time when the IT major is facing major headwinds on Revenue to margins to Series of senior level Exists . India's fourth-biggest IT services company, Wipro, has never had a professional CEO complete two full terms at the helm. But with the appointment of Srinivas Pallia as CEO, the company is returning to its roots. Pallia, who joined Wipro in 1992 and rose through the ranks to become the boss of its biggest market, Americas 1, comes across as a perfect fit for the next stage of Wipro's evolution. The question of whether non-Indian CEOs are well-equipped to run large Indian firms is a valid one. Executive firms are better equipped to respond to macroeconomic conditions, but culture does matter. Non-Indian CEOs have led several global companies successfully, indicating that leadership effectiveness transcends national boundaries. However, understanding and integrating into the cultural context of an Indian firm can be crucial for success. The debate on whether an insider or outsider is better suited for leadership roles in large Indian firms remains open, with arguments for both sides based on adaptability, cultural understanding, and strategic vision. Is it a good strategy to have an outsider make massive changes and then an insider bring back the core of the culture? These are important questions to consider as companies become more global. Subrata Kabiraj: Wipro's Annual Employee Survey report is out! The Times Of India has a copy too! I wish I had that copy too! What caught my attention is this: The survey findings revealed that 91% of 'Participating employees" go above and beyond their responsibilities, to help Wipro succeed! <Does this 91% sound too high to you? Don't be skeptical, despite that fact that they had to remove their CEO recently after lackluster performance of Wipro against competitors, on all important metrices!> We know, Wipro has a new CEO (Srini Palia) and he has the same CHRO Saurabh Govil, who completed 15 years with Wipro this month! Saurabh's email to all employees, lists actions of new engagement at Wipro under the new regime! I had looked at Saurabh's profile, when media reported that, he was the highest paid CHRO in India. It was some 7 years back and then it was close to INR. 2.7 Cr. 1. Srini will have his leadership council meeting every quarter. 3. BU Heads will have their quarterly meetings (aka Town Hall meetings) with their teams. 3. Managers will get a "handbook", "every two months," which will help them drive down, key strategic intent and plans and associated communication to their teams. Communication is key and more than that, dialogue is key with your workers, without the filter of their managers! One may wonder, we never heard of the CHRO when Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji went ballistic on his staff found to be doing "Moonlighting" and that too with Wipro's direct competitors. 300 got the boot! We didn't hear of the CHRO when Wipro was under performing for long under the ex-pat CEO, who chose to be in France all his time of 4 years, when his team was in India and clients in the US! Wonder, does such circumstances as given above, would it need a new CEO to start initiatives of quarterly Town Halls and arming managers with a handbook of information on company's key initiatives and goals? In digital world working with knowledge workers, were such information kept only with the privileged few? It is also one of the most challenging aspects of an organizational transformation to execute—and sustain. In 2020, the Indian software giant Wipro took on the task of reshaping the culture of the company, which has more than 220,000 employees across six continents. The Bangalore-based organization, which started as a vegetable oil–manufacturing firm, is now India’s third-largest IT services provider by market capitalization. After becoming Wipro’s executive chairman, in July 2019, Rishad Premji felt that the company’s performance did not reflect its true potential. Premji strongly believes that people and culture determine a company’s success and failure as much as strategy, if not more. He is on a journey to make Wipro “a high-performing organization that still has a soul, that is empathetic, vulnerable, collaborative, and decent.” Instead of using complicated messaging to communicate—and implement—an elusive concept like culture, Premji has chosen five simple, commonplace habits to promote this change

Wipro’s senior level exodus may continue in the short term !! What happening when new CEO take over - When a new CEO takes over a company, it is common for changes to be implemented, particularly within the senior leadership team. The primary focus is to minimize resistance, by bringing in executives who have worked with the CEO before are likely familiar with their leadership style, expectations, and decision-making processes. New incoming CEO Myth - The incoming CEO often convinced that by appointing trusted individuals, the risk associated with unknown performance and potential opposition from the existing leadership minimized. This approach can help stabilize the organization during the transition period. My Experience and observation From my experience, I believe this is a blunder which is frequently done by leadership candidate. By following this approach, new CEO move into his comfort zone by surrounding himself with trusted colleagues to create a sense of control and predictability in an otherwise uncertain environment. The points which are made to convince leadership realignment approach is to reduce learning curve, personal loyalty, faster decision making and many others. Why this approach is blunder? I think the biggest blunder happens by this approach is that CEO creates a echo chamber and this might lack the diverse perspective. There might be political environment created and bureaucracy prevails which hampers the growth of organization. This might also bring the culture which might appear as perceived favoritism. What must the approach- I have been a believer that a leader must prove his mettle by effectively manage resistance, effectively manage resistance to create a stronger, more cohesive leadership team. This not only proves their leadership capabilities but also positions the company to compete more effectively in the market. What Wipro Investor must enforce? I think every Wipro CEO had the leadership reshuffle approach, however if Wipro investors want to look at strong performing organization which provide them exceptional growth and ROI then they must oppose this leadership reshuffle approach. The disquiet brewing at Wipro with CEO Thierry Delaporte looks to have forced the Frenchman's hand. The company announced on Saturday that Delaporte has resigned. This comes more than a year ahead of his contracted five-year tenure that was to end in July 2025. This came as no surprise. In his place, Wipro has appointed a 32-year company veteran, Srini Pallia. Pallia will take over as the CEO and MD effective immediately. This marks a return to an internal candidate for the top job, after having two external ones prior to this. The Times Of India was the first to report in January that Wipro is grooming at least three internal leaders including Pallia for the top role. As the CEO of Americas 1, Pallia was overseeing key accounts like T-Mobile, Ford, US Foods, AT&T, Citibank, Levi’s, and Dell. Pallia is also known to have overseen accounts like Estee Lauder and Tapestry. Despite the restructuring, Delaporte could do little to reverse Wipro's long-time underperformance in relation to its peers, an underperformance that led to HCLTech overtaking Wipro in revenue in 2018-19. Delaporte also made two big acquisitions, those of Capco and Rizing, but neither are seen to have had yet the impact that Wipro hoped they would. “My mission is to rebuild Wipro for the next 5-10 years,” Delaporte told TOI after the September quarter results.
