My advocacy began on a small scale in women and youth spaces and at international conferences like the Internet Governance Forum and RightsCon. However, being identified by the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda to lead sessions on ‘Enhancing Knowledge Management, ICT Adaptation, and Digital Skilling Among Persons with Disabilities’ gave me the opportunity to share my experiences, insights, and knowledge of ICT accessibility features with a broader community of people with disabilities. Along the way, I picked up several lessons that have significantly improved my facilitation, presentation, and advocacy skills. https://lnkd.in/dZKykd3j #DisabilityInclusion #DigitalInclusion #Technology #a11y

R Community Episode 77 Conversation with Many Bautista, community worker Community support is crucial in helping new immigrants integrate into Canadian culture and in raising awareness about Pride Month. Here are several ways communities can assist: Organize social events where immigrants can meet locals and build connections. Encourage participation in local festivals, fairs, and cultural events. Volunteer Opportunities: Encourage immigrants to volunteer in community projects and initiatives. Volunteering can help build a sense of belonging and improve language skills. Raising Awareness about Pride Month Educational Campaigns: Organize workshops and seminars to educate the community about the history and significance of Pride Month. Provide resources such as pamphlets, books, and online content about LGBTQ+ rights and history. Inclusive Events and Celebrations: Host Pride parades, festivals, and other celebratory events that are open to everyone in the community. Include activities that educate and entertain, such as storytelling sessions, film screenings, and art exhibitions. Collaborations with LGBTQ+ Organizations: Partner with local LGBTQ+ organizations to co-host events and share resources. Invite speakers from these organizations to talk about their experiences and the importance of inclusivity. Visibility and Representation: Display Pride flags and symbols in public spaces, businesses, and community centers. Highlight stories and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals in community newsletters, social media, and local media. Safe Spaces and Support Groups: Create safe spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can meet and support each other. Establish support groups for different demographics, such as youth, elders, and families. Advocacy and Policy Support: Advocate for policies that protect and support LGBTQ+ rights at the local and national levels. Encourage community members to participate in advocacy efforts and support LGBTQ+ initiatives. By fostering a welcoming environment and promoting inclusivity, communities can play a significant role in helping new immigrants integrate and raising awareness about important cultural events like Pride Month. https://lnkd.in/gNubmq2r Infinity Safety Awareness R Safety and Consulting #diversityequityinclusionbelonging #lgtbqcommunity #equity #inclusionmatters #pride2024 #pridemonth #volunteer #immigrants #diversityandinclusion #Diversity

This NAIDOC week felt different, maybe it's the focus following the disappointment of the referendum. Maybe it's becoming an Australian Citizen a few weeks ago. Either way this year my eyes were opened, and a huge unlearning journey began. Here are some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, some working at the intersection of disability, to your LinkedIn feed. Thanks to Rebekah Williams for recommending The Australian Wars on Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia. A mini series of unlearning, which inspired this week's edition of #MostlyUnlearning Last week I got to e-meet Mikala Sedgwick 🖤💛❤️ through our work on the National Disability Data Asset Scoping Panel. Data warriors is a new terms to me, one I resonated with instantly. NAB celebrations, hearing Adam Fletcher and Jake Briggs yarning about the intersection of disabled and First Nations experiences. Hearing Jake speak about being visibly disabled yet defending his cultural heritage was a flip on the usual discussion about invisible disability. Yet another moment of unlearning. Lastly, spending 2 hours at FW (Future Women) NAIDOC event led by Gabrielle Ebsworth and hearing from Apryl Day, Courtney Ugle, Shawana Andrews and Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts (who I got to speak to afterwards). I particularly reflected on - Research as an act of resistance, First Nations academics challenging the idea of what research and knowledge is from Shawana Andrews - Intergenerational trama is also intergenerational strength and resilience from Courtney Ugle and Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts There was so much more discussed and marinating inside. I encourage you to follow these wonderful people and have a read of this week's edition of Mostly Unlearning Image Description: Selfie of Vanessa and Briar, smiling to camera #NAIDOC #DisabilityLeadership #Disability #Accessibility #AccessibleDesign

Today, 3 December, is International Day of People with Disability, a day to raise community awareness, understanding, and acceptance of the 4.4 million people with disability in Australia. This year's theme is ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.’ By working towards each of the 17 SDGs, we contribute to building a better and fairer world for everyone. In Australia, the journey towards inclusivity for people with disabilities, including those with MS, is ongoing. In this effort, MS Australia collaborates with national alliances to advocate decision-makers about key issues for people affected by MS, including affordable and accessible treatments, MS Nurses, increased funding for research, protection of legal rights for people with MS, and much more. Some 1.3 billion people, or 16 per cent of the global population, have a #disability. Recognizing the need for a more inclusive and representative political landscape that respects and incorporates their needs and perspectives is therefore crucial for democracies in the OSCE region. This week in Ireland, we launched our new e-course for parliaments and political parties, which introduces learners to the common barriers facing people with disabilities in participating in political and public life, and provides tips, #tools and good practices to mitigate them.
