ICYMI: PHR’s latest report, in collaboration with @harvardmed @harvardlaw, exposes a continuing trend of ICE using solitary confinement for punitive purposes rather than as a last resort – in violation of its own directives. Now, U.S. senators have unveiled a proposed funding bill that would make extreme, punitive, and unworkable changes to the U.S. asylum system. Amidst votes on this bill and Mayorkas' impeachment, PHR unveils a critical bipartisan issue: the U.S. Government's inhuman deployment of solitary confinement in immigration detention. #DearEuropeanParliament, I cannot support the harmful #MigrationDetention and I want you, European Parliament, to question this system and demand a change. Thousands of people, including children, are detained in the EU for their immigration status. Deprivation of liberty is an extremely dehumanizing and harsh measure that is proven to be harmful to people’s physical and mental health. It should only be used when no other measure is possible. Most people in detention because of migration procedures, never committed a crime and represent no danger to the host society. We believe in a EU that is that recognizes the right of liberty as a fundamental right to everybody and opposes detention in migration procedures. We want the next European Parliament to strongly question the use of detention and ask for the implementation of alternatives to detention. Until we end migration detention, we want the European Parliament to ensure that the detention conditions are humane. That's why I'm going to vote in the #EuropeanElections2024 Read more about why your vote in the European Elections matters to end migration detention at https://lnkd.in/gjTG_g5y Learn how you can #UseYourVote at https://together.eu/

The EU Migration Pact will affect hundreds of thousands of children each year. We tell you how in our new briefing 👇 Adopted in May, the final text of the Pact normalises the arbitrary use of immigration detention, including for children and families, increases racial profiling, uses “crisis” procedures to enable pushbacks, and returns individuals to places where they are at risk of violence, torture, and arbitrary detention. In our new briefing, we focus in particular on: 📌 involvement of child protection actors 📌 detention and risk of de facto detention 📌 access to a secure residence permit 📌 procedural guarantees in asylum and border procedures 📌 guardianship 📌 age assessments 📌 registration and use of children’s data, including biometric data 📖 Read the full analysis on https://lnkd.in/dFBKACYj

The "prison" narrative reinforces the #criminality of migration. Using the term "prisons" to describe asylum accommodation reinforces the idea migrants, including asylum seekers, have done something wrong. Furthermore, we often see migrants themselves upholding these norms in statements like “I am not a criminal”. This upholds the belief that "criminals" should be treated poorly by the State, + the increasing division of society. Lessons from the prison abolitionist movement teach us that the language around "prisons" + criminal justice can reinforce the violence of the system itself. Undoing harmful systems must be based in language which reaffirms the humanity + dignity of those impacted by it. Transformational + meaningful change of both the incarceration + immigration system must be based in humanity + compassionate language. As the National Rapporteur on the Trafficking of Human Beings in Ireland, we provide independent oversight of the State’s actions to combat human trafficking and protect victims. We do this by highlighting strengths and gaps, as well as identifying trends in the overall anti-trafficking response. We have highlighted that the State needs to address gaps in legislation, such as details relating to child trafficking, the equal application for all victims regardless of nationality, immigration status, or pending international protection application, and statutory protection from prosecution for victims. #EUAntiTraffickingDay
