Here we go 2024!” 💃 THE GOOD ~ We aired on Shark Tank ABC, launched Kroger, and changed our brand name from Honey Bunchies to Bon Bee™ Honey... within a 2 month span. 😮 ~ After being selected for 7-Eleven’s #Brandswithheart in both 2019 and 2022, we were picked to be the only nutrition bar in the emerging brands section of 7-Eleven’s annual tradeshow. ~ We had VIRAL support on LinkedIn with over 1.2 million post views asking our friends in Dallas to support our 7-Eleven test set...and man, did they deliver. Thank you, #Dallas!!! ❤️ ~ Mable picked us as 1 of 16 inaugural brands for their innovative McLane Company, Inc. partnership and we continue to rock the #TopShop badge on Faire. ~ Colorado Department of Agriculture took us under their wing to guide us in exploring interest from Canada, Mexico, Turkey, and Kuwait. ~ We grew our omnichannel presence including placement in museums and botanical gardens....can you say American Museum of Natural History? (plus so many more!) ~ Features in TImes-Call, The Denver Post, Denver Business Journal, Yahoo Finance and more! An interview with Joe Pardo discussing Shark Tank and a brand discussion on BevNET.com, Inc.’s Taste Radio with Ray Latif and Perfect Bar’s Leigh Keith. 🍫🎙 ~ Our Shark Tank episode has aired 2x on ABC and at least 6x on CNBC so far. There's a re-air today at 1p in fact (S14E20)! 😄 THE TRIALS Despite the shiny objects above, it’s impossible to avoid the struggles. These are just a few… ~ Balancing hockey stick demand, in-house production, and being bootstrapped, with limited ability to hire the amount of people we need. ~ Surviving the entrepreneurial lifestyle and trying to remember, “Why???” ~ COVID for 2 months ~ Merchandising errors for months and months risking unspeakable amounts of inventory and our business. ~ Filling hundreds of Shark Tank orders by hand, our one and only fulfillment team member out sick, and our shipping software massively glitching – so grateful to Mom and Dad for their help! ~ Worst of all, and the most difficult to share, enduring an unbearable personal loss in our family. Having come from the ad agency business and 30 years of strategic brand management, I can just imagine the conversation around the brainstorming session for Anheuser Busch TV spots. AE: “If you want to sell more beer, you should pay us to make insanely expensive, high-liability commercials with big horses, little dogs, and no product.” CLIENT: “Are you sh!tt!ng me?” DOGS AND CLYDESDALES: “Hold my beer…” We used to advise our clients to steer clear of using babies or animals in there, creative. It would generally double the production time and drive half the crew crazy. These days, I would say, say no matter what you do, figure out a way to get a dog in your marketing. Dollars Follow Dogs. 🐎 Big Horses Are The Best #BrandAmbassadors 🐴 I'm sure my fellow marketers have noticed the recent effort by Anheuser-Busch to go back to their #brand roots and use their signature Clydesdale horses as ambassadors. They are touring the U.S., visiting different locations and welcoming the public to come see, pet, and enjoy photo ops with their majestic beasts. I won't go into any motivation that may have "inspired" this effort. Let's just say that Anheuser-Busch is returning to a very positive and iconic aspect of their brand. In my own perception, they're lucky to have those wonderful animals as symbols of their company. First introduced in 1933 to commemorate the end of Prohibition, the Clydesdale team has been present at many events, and has been featured in Super Bowl commercials. (I'm sure you can picture your favorite one!) We all know there's a history here. Everyone has their own ideas and opinions about Budweiser, but I think there's an opportunity here, as well. When your #marketing efforts do not have the results you hoped for, and when your brand receives public reaction counter to what best serves the company, go back to what worked in the first place. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
