From the moment we’re born, we live in a society in which we’re interdependent with others, says sociologist Serge Paugam (2018). How can social interaction be encouraged in a fragmented society under strain? What makes living together and creating a society possible? In this context, re-establishing links and inventing new social spaces play a crucial role in building inclusive and supportive societies. We have carried out a multi-partner foresight study with a number of stakeholders from different backgrounds to examine current developments and put forward the kind of future we would all like to see. 🏙️ Designing places to live, and spaces and facilities that encourage social cohesion and living together involves rethinking our strategies and ways of doing things, as well as taking into account a multiplicity of key variables linked to the local context. Drawing on concrete examples, feedback, studies and contributions from experts, we look at “Forging links for friendly, supportive and inclusive communities” in this new trend report and the main levers, strategies and best practices for designing projects that meet the needs of local residents while fostering a better way of living together in our cities and territories. How can we design cities and places that are safer and more inclusive for all, including women and girls? Last Thursday, London Legacy Development Corporation launched its ‘Creating Places that Work for Women and Girls’ Handbook, developed in collaboration with Arup. This handbook seeks to ensure that places are designed to be equitable for everyone. London Legacy Development Corporation is the first Local Planning Authority that has fully mainstreamed gender-informed design and planning processes, and the first organisation in the UK to publish such guidelines. The knowledge and good practice have now been compiled into a handbook providing practical steps that urban planners, developers, architects, and other stakeholders can take to ensure a gender-informed approach is applied in the planning, design and decision-making process, from the inception of any project through to delivery and long-term management. 👉 Read and download the handbook here: bit.ly/4d1nm1e 👉 Read the press release here: bit.ly/3S8e77m #womenssafety #genderequality #builtenvironment #planning #urbandesign #inclusivespaces

Professor of Urban Innovation and Director / Edinburgh Napier University & Tallinn University of Technology
🇺🇳Thrilled to announce that our proposal for the creation of the #WorldSmartCitiesOutlook has been approved by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). Driving this ambitious project is a multidisciplinary team that I look forward to working with - Paolo Gerli, Huong Nguyen, Clare McTigue, Fabio Neves da Rocha, and Emine Akgün. Immensely grateful to the Knowledge and Innovation Branch at UN-Habitat for their ongoing trust and belief in our work on smart city development - Edlam Abera Yemeru, Livia Schaeffer Nonose, Isabel Wetzel, Milou Jansen, Roberta Maio 🚀 The collaboration between the United Nations and our Unity Lab / Urban Innovation Policy Lab at Edinburgh Napier University is embarking on a new journey. 🏙️ This is a landmark project in the #SmartCities domain. We will conduct a comprehensive #GlobalAssessment of #SmartCityDevelopments, shedding light on trends, challenges, and opportunities across different regions in the world. This project will be based on a #GlobalCollaboration. 👥 The World Smart Cities Outlook will play a pivotal role in informing the development of #InternationalGuidelines on #PeopleCentered #SmartCities. Under the leadership of UN-Habitat, these guidelines will provide a non-binding framework to assist UN Member States in developing national and local regulations, plans, and strategies for smart cities. The primary aim is to equip public sector organizations and urban development stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary for leading digital transformations in urban areas. This involves recognizing the critical need for establishing effective governance structures and prioritizing socio-cultural and environmental factors over technology. 📊Our study's insights will be crucial in enriching these guidelines, providing essential data to ensure they are rooted in solid evidence and encompass global knowledge. Stay tuned for updates and possibilities for collaboration! #UnityLab #UrbanInnovation #SmartCities #UnitedNations #GlobalCollaboration #WorldSmartCitiesOutlook #SustainableUrbanDevelopment #InclusiveCities #SustainableCities #DigitalTransformation #Governance #GlobalGuidelines

Towns and city centres face challenging times on many fronts – #climate, #nature recovery, cost of living and social equity. LDA Design director Clare Wilks explains the power that lies in radical incrementalism – a series of small, long-term changes that together amount to something really significant – and in #placemaking plans that coordinate actions, motivate local people, drive investment and make good things happen. Greater collaboration, meaningful conversations – which also means listening hard – and strong partnerships are all key. Read 'Conversation and the art of radical incrementalism': https://lnkd.in/eG6gtgsg Clare will be talking about how #radicalincrementalism is working for #Bangor at ‘A place-led future for North Wales’ hosted by the Design Commission for Wales on Thursday 24 October. https://lnkd.in/eapfEt4c #highstreet #bounceback #placemaking #bettertowns #bettercities #greenertowns #greenercities #urbandesign #masterplanning #planning #community #engagement #placemakingplans #Wales #wellbeing

🌍 Rethinking Accessibility: Building Inclusive Cities for All 🏙️ The UK’s cities are some of the world’s most dynamic and inspiring urban spaces, rich in heritage, culture, and opportunity. Yet, for many, these spaces remain inaccessible. One in four people in the UK lives with a disability, and countless others face temporary mobility challenges every year. It’s clear that accessibility is more than just a feature—it’s a necessity that many built environment professionals have yet to fully address. Inclusive design is not simply an add-on; it’s about creating environments that are welcoming to everyone. From practical design changes like multi-height reception desks to tactile wayfinding for the visually impaired, these adjustments are essential steps toward making our spaces truly accessible. Inclusive design also carries significant benefits, fostering more positive experiences and encouraging greater community and customer engagement, which leads to sustainable growth for cities and businesses alike. The Inclusive Spaces and Places report from the Crown and Grosvenor offers a forward-thinking approach, encouraging higher standards of inclusive design and introducing inclusive design panels that prioritize lived experience in the planning process. By integrating these perspectives early, we can ensure that accessible design becomes part of the foundation rather than an afterthought. This is a moment for the industry to come together, led by initiatives like the Accessible and Inclusive Places Industry Group. With early commitments from major players, the goal is to set new standards that prioritize accessibility across our built environment. Let’s use this opportunity to share knowledge and drive change that reflects the needs of all. It’s time to rethink our approach to accessibility, ensuring our cities and spaces are places where everyone can thrive. #AccessibleCities #InclusiveDesign #BuiltEnvironment #UrbanDevelopment https://lnkd.in/dgfhfAWP
