The next phase within Woodlands’ Watercourse Crossings Restoration program is survey and design. In this phase, our crews will use a GNSS base-rover and a drone to collect detailed data of the proposed roadway watercourse crossing. Featured in this post are a few examples of how we visualize the collected data using point clouds. Point clouds are comprised of millions of individual data points (x/y/z coordinate), which are manipulated to create 2D images and 3D point clouds representing a site. The accompanied video features 2 different point clouds created for serious concern watercourse crossings involving a hanging culvert (first), and heavy erosion (second). Check out this amazing comparison of pre and post peatland restoration captured via drone technology and processed through Pix4D photogrammetry software. The split-screen feature enables the analysis of both pre and post data at the same time. Initially, you can see the old drainage systems dug into the peatland to drain it for agricultural purposes over 50 years ago. But as you slide the screen, the restoration work is revealed, with dams created to slow the flow of water and raise the water table, returning the peatland to its natural, waterlogged condition. This re-wetting enables sphagnum mosses and natural vegetation to flourish, bringing the area back to its original peat-forming peatland state. #Pix4D #peatland #peatlands #peatlandrestoration

Awesome to see this work by our team in print led by Clementine Chirol, with Nigel Pontee, Charlotte Thompson, Hachem Kassem and Ivan Haigh. Saltmarsh restoration using managed realignment often includes excavation of simplified tidal creek networks, but their design is based on limited evidence. We monitored 10 restored tidal creek systems in the UK over up to 20 years using lidar. We found that external conditions (e.g., tidal range and estuarine sediment concentration) and local conditions (e.g., site elevation and soil compaction) control how easily creeks can form and determines if engineering efforts such as creek excavations are worth considering. We propose a new conceptual model of creek design and evolution in managed realignment sites in the UK and updated guidance for tidal creek network design and implementation at managed realignment sites. Vegetation index is a numerical measure that quantifies the amount and condition of vegetation in a specific area based on remote sensing data. Vegetation indices are calculated by combining different spectral bands from satellite imagery or aerial photography, which reflect the amount of energy absorbed and reflected by plants in the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. There are several vegetation indices that are commonly used, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index (WDRVI), and Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI).
