What a cracking video from the team Downtown in Business - so appreciated, and what a fantastic team they all are - so supportive of our business and they have made a real impact on helping us reopen and boost visitors through our doors. 🙏 Whilst we don't talk enough about tough times & the learning we go through during these periods, I'm open to talk about the tough 2022 we encountered here - the perfect storm of a drop in business & increased costs - do truly put Independent #Hospitality Venues often very quickly (aka a few months) in tough cash-flow situations, and given I've experienced this previously & didn't act fast enough, it did take us on a path to make uncomfortable, fast decisions on our future here and we did take the decision to close to the public for an internal contract, very much for the longevity of our business - we had to future-proof our investment, our lease and I don't regret this. We are in business to thrive and survive and sadly in life you have to have the highs and the lows and that's how it goes. We have come out of survival mode fighting, and at a time when the economics at least look a little brighter than they were during & after COVID and we have made some changes - No Dinner Service, Smaller Garden - in short "we learned and we progress" - as all businesses should. We are much more financial sound and we look forward to continuing our journey after a much needed injection to our beautiful property and look forward to continuing here, as we celebrate our 7 years here this month. #TeamHesketh look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Chester Townhouse! Bravery is contagious. I spent last weekend at the Sheraton Skyline Hotel London Heathrow for this year‘s annual Property Elevator live conference, which I'd organised for the Elevator team (gotta love a job that combines my first career - events and marketing - and my new one - property). Property Elevator is a TV show on Sky TV Network that's effectively Dragon's Den for property. As part of the event we saw 5 property developers pitch their deals live to the panel of 5 Angel investors, in front of a room of 100 people, hoping to get funding. One thing they all had in common beforehand? They were all sh*tting themselves. And who wouldn't be?! But they all pushed through and did the scary thing anyway. Amazing. Now, I couldn't sit there last week and talk them through their own concerns, helping to keep them committed and hold their nerve, and then not do my own scary thing that stood before me last week. So, not wanting to be a chicken or a hypocrite, I did my own scary thing. I don't know how it will pan out, but I'm so grateful that their bravery grew my own. Thank you Maura, Kulvinder, Annie, James and Stephen; because of you my comfort zone has stretched and I am better for it. I guess that saying is true, then, about becoming the sum of your 5 closest people... Visitor experience Not here, but there What’s a good queue? Windsor wins Here’s a thought👇🏼 The visitor experience is all part of the enjoyment when it works well but also adds to the stress and strain when it doesn’t. Recently we went downtown to Windsor by train as it’s a short hop. Given the state of the traffic and the parking that was a good call. We’d bought visitor tickets for Windsor Castle, which I hadn’t been inside for a good number of years. Another good call. It was a fabulous outing. So to the point. The parts that are so often aggravating about visiting attractions had been thought through and solved. Good queue management, very tidy and well managed estate, motivated and engaged staff, plenty of clean toilets, clear signs. Brilliant execution. And a wonderful Castle too. Too many times in the business world you have to fight through the complications to get to where you need to be. The aggro’ quotient is so high as to overwhelm any future benefits. Customer service and “think like a client” make all the difference. In a commercial world when there is always competition one way to stand out is how you make your customers feel. Don’t give them a reason to give up or go somewhere else. It seems so simple but it only comes about through clear attention to detail and the mindset that it matters. This morning I’ve already read one of my connections having a holiday nightmare, last week I was getting hugely frustrated by the ineptitude of my local council, so you don’t need to look far to find places where it has gone awry. So feedback builds reputations and is a part of the process of making informed choices.
