Do we really live in a "developed" country if we consider the fact that we no longer know or talk to our neighbours? And if we are not able to communicate and live harmoniously with fellow humans, how could we communicate and live harmoniously with our non-human neighbours? How do we stop harming our fellow earth inhabitants or undermining the conditions they need to survive and thrive? One of the ways in which we impact wildlife is by putting up fences and fragmenting landscapes. Rhian Berning faces this challenge where wildlife can no longer move freely on their ancient migratory pathways due to changes in land use, multiple farms and the associated fences. Emblematic local South African species such as leopards, elephants and even the smallest tortoises can't thrive anymore due to these meters' high fences and lack of safe nature corridors. Rhian is an environmental #activist and CEO of the Eden to Addo Corridor initiative. Her ambition: create living #corridors to protect and restore #biodiversity and freedom of movement for #wildlife as well as foster sustainable livelihoods for local people from the Garden Route to the Eastern Cape in South Africa. We must act now... This World Environment Day, we’re highlighting the critical work in land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience. 🌍🇧🇼 One of our planet's most treasured wildlife areas, the #OkavangoDelta in Botswana, is facing serious threats. In a poignant article featured in Africa Outlook magazine this February, our founder, Daniel Kaul, underscored the urgency to raise awareness and take action to safeguard this vital ecosystem. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and celebrated for its rich biodiversity, the Okavango Delta is imperilled by human exploitation of its water sources. This remarkable wilderness, nestled on a geological fault line, relies on seasonal floodwaters from neighbouring Namibia and Angola to sustain its diverse wildlife. But in 2023, the water level fell to an all-time low. We aim to #educate people about these issues and #conservation initiatives to preserve magical places like the Okavango Delta for the future. Today we're celebrating International Day of Forests! 🌳 Healthy forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks, providing fresh air, drinking water and habitats for many unique plant and animal species. The 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests official proceedings end today. It has been a great honour to represent the City of Cape Town at this event in Washington DC. The opportunity to share thoughts about urban forests and their role in urban city-making, was indeed a privledge. All the resilience shock and stress reality checks on planting enthusiasm, may have been a bit of a thunder cloud hovering over the sun, but we need to keep drought, flooding, heat in mind, not only for ourselves, but for our trees and forests. The resilience 'of' trees will affect the resilience they are able to provide and anticipating their needs, is foremost for nurturing their resilience potential. Talking about planting urban forests could lose one friends in Cape Town. But a pragmatic approach that responds to micro-climate nuances in a way that protects precious biodiversity is achievable - and we need to be talking about it and finding ways to make it happen. This will however need to be balanced against water availability, flooding, fire, wind and social anxiety around trees and crime. As with all things 'resilience' - its complex and the competing demands makes decision-making difficult, particularly in resource constrained environments. But - there are also opportunities in the adversity for re-imagining Cape Town's green future. It was also special to share some learnings from the Open Space Working Group in this afternoon's keynote for side event session titled "From Concrete to Canopy: Restoring Biodiversity and Ecosystems through Urban Forests". The calibre of presenters and panellists has been extraordinary and their warm inclusion - very humbling. A big thank you to those who gave positive feedback, it's fantastic to know that your message has been heard and quite a thing to face an audience of 800-1000 people, but much easier if you imagine they're a forest. I'm deeply thankful to the Arbor Day Foundation for making it possible for me to be here.
