There is power in opening a door to opportunity.
I reflect back to when I was in matric in preparation for my final exams. I was extremely close to failing Pure Maths in matric with about 15% in my preliminary exams. I had struggled with my foundational concepts, didn’t seem mathematically strong and didn’t have the basics in place to fully grasp the content in matric. This was tough for me and with that came a lot of pressure, anxiety to perform and uncertainty about what would happen after writing the finals.
But then an opportunity presented itself. A past pupil at the school decided to offer her time in the form of tutoring sessions. We sat together every single week doing matric past papers, working through key foundational concepts. With all this intentional support and tools she imparted - something clicked. I understood basic concepts I had previously never grasped.
Long story short - I went from 12% to 60% in less than a few months and had passed with distinctions.
This signified four things for me.
1. It is possible to do the impossible with the right resources, the right attitude, the support and with people who are willing to walk alongside you.
2. Good foundations in your subject understanding is crucial and will help set you up for your final high school years. Find support to help you bridge gaps you may have (earlier rather than later).
3. Opportunity is everything. I’m forever grateful to my tutor at the time for presenting the opportunity and investing her time in my academic journey.
4. You never know who you might impact in the smallest way by opening a door of opportunity. Take the step. Provide the door. Grab the opportunity.
We are investing in opening doors of opportunity for our matrics at The Sozo Foundation by creating a safe space in the form of a camp. The heart is to provide them with a space to refresh, have fun and walk way with tools and investment that can set them up for exam success in the next half of the year. I personally know that this kind of opportunity is extremely valuable to matrics and wish I had something similar during my time.

"Together, let us provide safe spaces for growth, learning, and lasting memories for our young people".
We are Elana Cuyler and Kristin Rockhill, and we have decided to lace up our running shoes and take on the challenge of raising funds for an initiative close to our hearts.
We are doing this by running the 21.1km Knysna Half Marathon on the 22nd of June 2024 and for every km we complete we're hoping to raise a R1000. Supporting our cause will make a direct impact on the work that we do here at Sozo.
One of Sozo's areas of work that resonates deeply with us is our youth development initiatives through youth camps, which we have been able to run for our young people in Vrygrond.
The target we are raising is R44000 which will contribute towards the camp resources, transport and venue. R750 will allow one learner to attend our camps.
Donate or share to support the cause through our GivenGain Camp Campaign we are running here: https://lnkd.in/d3fjsFPU
