How we farm, obviously affects our climate 👨🌾 We can solve it though, easily, through tech 🥔 Tilling - Uses industrial machines to cut through soil and leave behind a series of hundreds of trenches which crop seeds can then be planted into, again using industrial machines. The problem - As you can see, is that it breaks down the soil, disrupting the organisms within it, and releasing significant amounts of carbon which soils will retain if left undisturbed. The solution - Education and deployment of existing tech. We can support our farmers to understand how to prepare the soil without tilling and we have the industrial tech to do it. Sure, it's more costly, but most countries already subsidize the sector, and we now have ESG funds and carbon programs which would give farmers all they need to manage their farms organically. Enough to fund the new machinery and incentivize farmers everywhere in the world, to give parts of the land to nature, and to have a diverse organic farm, yielding 30-40 varieties of fruit, veg, and other products. The best bit! Organic farms, once supported, can sometimes produce twice as much food. More nutritional food. And food that can be grown using far less land and materials. (2/2) 🌾 There is no dearth of technology solutions. Both Alternate Wetting and Drying (#AWD) and Direct Seeding of Rice (#DSR) are agricultural practices used to reduce methane emissions. There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to whether AWD is definitively better than DSR for methane emission reduction. It depends on the specific conditions and goals of the rice cultivation system, in particular water availability and management. 💧 As quite obviously “precision flooding” requires a good control of irrigation. If 89% of rice land areas are irrigated in Vietnam, it’s only 59% in the Philippines, 21% in Thailand and 16-17% in Myanmar and Cambodia (16%) 💰 Now let’s talk money: how to create the right incentive for smallholder farmers to transition to either solution? Luckily, even if VC money has been shy on rice-tech so far, there are several multi-stakeholder programmes rolled out to that end. Just to name 2 of the most ambitious ones: 🇹🇭 A five-year Thai Rice Green Climate Fund (GCF) project is expected to benefit more than 250,000 smallholder farmers in Thailand while reducing emissions in the agricultural sector by 2.4 million tonnes, thanks to the joint funding of GCF and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH 🇻🇳 To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Loc Troi Group innovates biological products, applying circular economy and green development, as part of the MARD-supported low-emission rice project that should reach 1Mha. Supporting this effort (and others), a $90-million credit package has been extended by LTG and FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank   🐘 And now the elephant in the room: just like the rate of *DISADOPTION* of conservation practices is substantial in the US, what will remain once the initial nudge goes away? https://lnkd.in/eTFWBTRu Happy to continue the conversation!
