Major investment is being made on the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield in the UK The Transpennine Route Upgrade, or TRU, is a transformative, multi-billion pound railway programme that will better connect passengers in the North of England. TRU will transform the Transpennine main line into a high-performing, reliable railway, bringing more frequent, more reliable, faster, greener trains. Stretching across the North of England between Manchester and York, via Huddersfield and Leeds, the 70-mile Transpennine main line serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under dozens of bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 29 level crossings. The programme is funded by the UK Department for Transport and delivered by Network Rail, through dedicated alliances and project teams. The project involves complex interfaces including electrification, signalling, stations, tunnels, civil structures, electrical and track improvements over 12 stations, 70 miles of track, 65 bridges & 6 tunnels. The TRU West Projects (taking place between Manchester and Leeds) is an essential part of the TRU Programme that increases the line capacity, reduces journey times, and alleviates congestion during peak periods, improving service, and enhancing safety and comfort for passengers. A collaboration between Network Rail, Amey with Siemens, BAM & Arup called the TRU West Alliance is already making this happen, including electrifying the line from Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge and increasing line speed through Miles Platting, and remodelling Stalybridge station. Along with Supply Chain Partners including Tony Gee, AHR Architects, COWI & Atkins, the Alliance is using lessons learned to find better ways of delivering remarkable outcomes as they increase line capacity from 2 to 4 at Huddersfield, complete highly complex engineering works near Ravensthorpe and create a new Morley Station. The upgrade of the railway was earmarked to cost £2.9bn in 2018, with the UK DfT now predicting that it will cost between £9bn and £11.5bn. Delivering railway projects presents significant challenges, particularly when they involve major stations or crossings over other rail lines and highways. These projects require planning and coordination, often within tight time constraints, to minimize disruptions to regular operations. One of the most complex aspects is managing construction activities over highways where halting traffic is not feasible. For instance, the video demonstrates the process of building a high-speed rail bridge over a busy highway, highlighting the need for solutions and careful scheduling to ensure both the safety and continuity of traffic flow while progressing with the railway construction. 🚇🌉 I’m incredibly proud that we (KBT Waterproofing) are a small part of this monumental project! The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is set to redefine accessibility and sustainability across our continent, and it’s an honor to be involved in making it a reality. Connecting Scandinavia and Central Europe, this endeavor is more than just infrastructure; it’s a testament to human innovation and cooperation. With a journey between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden reduced to just 7 minutes by train and 10 minutes by car, we’re witnessing a transformation in how we connect. But it’s not just about convenience; it’s about sustainability too. As part of the European TEN-T network, this project is a beacon of hope for a greener future, aligning perfectly with our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of Europe’s transport network. The scale of this tunnel, with its 4 lane motorway, 2 electrified rail tracks, and 89 impressive tunnel elements, is awe-inspiring. It shows what can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal. I can’t wait to see this project evolve and contribute to a more accessible and sustainable continent. Hats off to everyone involved; you’re making history! #ProudContributor #InfrastructureMilestone #SustainableEurope 🌍👷♂️🏗️

Construction of the World's Longest Immersed Tunnel Denmark’s largest infrastructure project , which is also the world's longest immersed tunnel, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel will remove a bottleneck, reduce travel time and strengthen links between Scandinavia and Central Europe. When the tunnel is completed in 2029, the journey between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden will take 7 minutes by train and 10 minutes by car. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will comprise a 4 lane motorway and 2 electrified rail tracks. It currently takes 4.5 hours by train from Hamburg to Copenhagen and 10 hours between Stockholm and Hamburg. When the tunnel and the upgrading of the rail infrastructure on both sides of the link are completed, this journey time will be cut by 2 hours. The project is part of the European TEN-T network, which aims to streamline infrastructure and reduce the environmental impact of Europe’s transport network. The tunnel will consist of 2 tubes for the motorway, 2 for the railway line and a service passage. It will include 89 tunnel elements each measuring 217m in length and 73,000t in weight, including 79 standard elements and ten special elements. Each tunnel element will include a basement area to house technical equipment. The tunnel elements will be placed on a 12m deep tunnel trench on the seabed. Each tunnel element will be joined together and technical installations within the tunnel will be initiated once joined. The tunnel will be covered with gravel, sand, and stone once all the elements are placed. The project also includes the electrification of the existing railway line to enable electric trains to operate on the route instead of diesel trains. The track between Ringsted and Rodby will also be updated to enable freight trains to operate on the route. The existing motorways will also be upgraded to connect with the new tunnel.
