I didn’t think it was possible to become a bigger fan of Beyoncé, until this HBR article: “Lessons from Beyoncé on Navigating Exclusion.” 🫶🏽
It looks at the success of Beyoncé’s (2024) album Cowboy Carter, and how this was a response to the overt exclusion she faced at the Country Music Awards (CMAs) in 2016.
If you have a harvard business review subscription or access to a few free articles, this is a must read: https://lnkd.in/e39XXShR
Either way, here’s a summary of the overarching themes that resonated with me:
✋ Navigating exclusion isn’t easy. Sadly, often you may not have the support to be able to stand up for yourself or to fight in that moment.
🔥 It’s ok to take a step back, re-strategise and trailblaze. If you are excluded from certain settings, perhaps there are ways to create your own spaces.
🤝🏽 Build a new network of support: Align yourself with likeminded people who you can collaborate with to make a bigger impact.
Even though we are making progress towards Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, how Beyoncé has had to navigate the country music genre is an example that there is far to go. But, as always, Queen Bey provides inspiration! 👑
Leaving you with my favourite line from the article: “Instead of assimilating into spaces where she had been rejected, she expanded her representation in Black culture.”
