Performing artists, especially in opera, have been struggling with deteriorating conditions worldwide. The English National Opera recent experience with a strike highlights the tensions. 🎶 According to a story in The Guardian, musicians at the English National Opera (ENO) have called off their strike action, set to be the first in 44 years, following a successful agreement with the organization. The dispute began in mid-January over plans to make the chorus, orchestra, and music staff "redundant" and then rehire them for only six months a year. It now appears to be resolved. 🔄 Revised Employment Terms After discussions with the Musicians’ Union (MU), the ENO has revised its initial plans. The musicians will now be offered seven months of guaranteed work, a minimum redundancy package, and enhancements to their contracts. This development has led to the cancellation of all planned industrial action for February. “Our members remain deeply disappointed that they have lost so much work and income when many of the other ENO staff have stayed full time," said Jo Laverty. 🎭 Continuing Negotiations While the performing arts union Equity, representing the ENO’s singers and chorus, reached an interim settlement on January 29, they are yet to finalize a complete resolution. This agreement marks a significant moment for the ENO, especially after the controversy surrounding its funding and the directive to relocate from London for future grants. “It is our intention to work on building up our members’ work with ENO so they can return to full contracts. An ideal long-term situation would see ENO making opera full time in both London and Manchester," said Jo Laverty. 💡 Despite the setbacks, including the loss of the ENO’s £12.8m annual grant from Arts Council England, there’s a silver lining with the announcement of additional funding and time for ENO's transition to Greater Manchester. Should you learn from the MASTERS⁉️… When I was in college studying voice, a common theme among my teachers was to sing in your own way. They advised against listening to other renditions of a song you're trying to learn and suggested relying solely on your voice and the sheet music. This was 20 years ago. Fast forward to today, with advancements in technology and evolving practices, I largely disagree with this approach. While the old method might work for some, I believe it isn't the best advice for most singers. To become great, you must first emulate the greats. 1️⃣ 🎵 If you aspire to be an exceptional classical singer with an amazing voice, it's beneficial to listen to renditions by renowned opera singers like Maria Callas, Jessye Norman and Renée Fleming, just to name a few. These professionals have honed their craft over many years, and you can learn from their nuances, tempos, and rhythms. Having a point of reference helps you understand where your voice fits and what audiences appreciate. 2️⃣ 🎶 Relying solely on sheet music and your voice can feel like driving blind; you might struggle with style, direction, and audience preferences. If you're serious about becoming a great opera singer, start by listening to your favorite renditions. 3️⃣ 🌟 Ensure you choose singers with similar voice types and ranges. Picking voices too different from your own can be challenging and unproductive. The Delhi High Court Bench of Justice Anish Dayal restrained Punjabi rapper and singer Bohemia from making music videos and songs or doing any public performance without prior written permission from Plaintiff Saga Music. The suit filed by Plaintiff, basically concerns violation of terms of a talent engagement agreement, which was entered between the parties in dispute, whereby Defendant agreed to work exclusively with Plaintiff for 45 months. The said agreement further stipulated that all the intellectual property in respect of Bohemia's songs, video and performances will rest with Plaintiff, and that he cannot collaborate or work with any other artist or label with prior written consent from Plaintiff. It is the case that Bohemia violated the terms of the said agreement by continuing with his musical tours and even released songs in collaboration with others and on his YouTube channel. Further, he did not produce even a single song for Plaintiff. It was also stated that Bohemia and people associated with him made defamatory allegations against Plaintiff on social media due to which the company was subjected to disparagement and adverse comments. Upon the very facts, the court granted an ex parte ad interim order restraining Defendant rapper from working with any third-party entity for making sound recordings, cinematograph films, musical works or performances without prior consent of Plaintiff.
