There is a limited treatment window in GBS where the extent of acute nerve damage determines the level of functional outcomes in the long run.

So, Doctor Gable, what are some of the key points that clinicians need to be aware of in the course of GBS? Well, Gibbs is an acute illness and can rapidly progress to paralysis and in some cases death. The most important point to bear in mind is that early diagnosis and targeted treatment given early from the onset of symptoms maximizes the overall health status of patients. As you mentioned, many patients first have an infection, either a bacterial, GI or respiratory infection. That infection that leads to an autoimmune response that is mediated by a part of the immune system known as complement and is targeted towards the peripheral nerves of the body is this. Complement mediated immune response progresses, the patient will experience weakness in their limbs. This weakness then advances rapidly and a large minority of patients may lead to the paralysis of the respiratory muscles requiring mechanical ventilation. Over time, the immune response decreases and most patients start to regain their muscle strength. However, this recovery is quite variable and there's a range of functional recovery. The most important factor to bear in mind is that there is a limited treatment window in GBS. Many patients will never go back to their old normal health status. The extent of acute nerve damage determines the level of functional outcomes in the long run, but we refer to as residual functional impairments are not uncommon years after the paralytic event.
