The fact that the Phoenix Suns HAVE TO hand out free TV antennas, like it's 1977, to potential fans so that they can watch the games on Channel 19 should say all you need to know about how this isn't (or shouldn't be) the silver bullet solution to reach fans sans their RSN Oh, some will say the fact that they were "all gone" in 3 hours proves that fans want to watch OTA with TV antennas...but cmon, people will literally take ANYTHING that's free. And, they conspicuously omitted reporting how many antennas they handed out. Was it 10? 100? 1000? Today, only 63% of HH's have access to broadcast TV stations via MVPD (cable/satellite), vMVPD (streaming) or OTA (antenna). Monday Metrics: With a reported 27 million viewers tuning into NBC Sunday Night Football for the New York Jets-Kansas City Chiefs matchup attended by #TaylorSwift including a 53% increase in viewership by #GenZ teen girls ages 12 to 17 according to Nielsen compared to the three previous Sunday Night Football games as reported by The Wall Street Journal, I was curious how many of my more than 75 Gen Z college students who I collaborate with each Monday first in a #publicrelations course followed by an integrated #marketing course tuned into NBC to watch the game. Two (2) students said they tuned into the NBC telecast out of more than 75, while the majority turned to their preferred plaforms - Gen Z's "big three" - TikTok, Instagram and YouTube - to consume on and off the field highlights. Interestingly, three (3) students out of 75+ tuned into Disney+ and ESPN+ earlier in the day to watch some of the "Toy Story Funday Football" telecast. As television networks and cable networks attempt to engage Gen Z and #GenAlpha viewers with what used to be must-see TV programming, they need to recognize that the behavior of sitting down in front of a television to watch sports and entertainment as a Gen Xer like me was raised on doing is not something Gen Z and Gen Alpha routinely do and that behavior will not be changing anytime soon. https://lnkd.in/eRkVgSGV
