Today the Sex Education Forum launches our annual Young People’s RSE Poll. This is a critical day in our calendar, as it gives us the opportunity to amplify young people’s opinions about their relationships and sex education provision, highlighting what they need more of alongside what’s going right.
This year, we were heartened to see that statutory provision seems to be embedding after Covid-19 delays, with 50% of young people reporting their RSE provision was good or very good - the highest number since our polling began. However, young people also told us that they don’t all feel personally included in RSE lessons and key topics like pornography, seeking the sexual health services, and LGBT+ issues are being neglected. They also told us that to fill these gaps, they’re turning to online sources including social media, which potentially opens them up to harmful misinformation.
We stand behind young people when they call on Government for more flexible provision, better teacher training, and expanded lessons across age ranges and beyond Year 11.
