Our #awarenesssessions include a segment where our digital resource person talks about CSAM. Amongst participants, there tends to be unanimous consent on the necessity to cultivate an environment where students feel comfortable and encouraged to engage in open discussions, particularly regarding sex education, which is deemed increasingly crucial in today's context. Global figures illustrated the alarming rise of CSAM, with 450,000 files reported in 2004 compared to over 87 million by 2022. Today the Sex Education Forum launches our annual Young People’s RSE Poll. This is a critical day in our calendar, as it gives us the opportunity to amplify young people’s opinions about their relationships and sex education provision, highlighting what they need more of alongside what’s going right. This year, we were heartened to see that statutory provision seems to be embedding after Covid-19 delays, with 50% of young people reporting their RSE provision was good or very good - the highest number since our polling began. However, young people also told us that they don’t all feel personally included in RSE lessons and key topics like pornography, seeking the sexual health services, and LGBT+ issues are being neglected. They also told us that to fill these gaps, they’re turning to online sources including social media, which potentially opens them up to harmful misinformation. This new ruling has strongly backed comprehensive sex education in schools, debunking the harmful myth that such content "promotes promiscuity” or “western values”. The Court emphasized the importance of CSE for fostering healthy attitudes towards sexuality and relationships, countering misinformation, and addressing stigma.
