Inside Higher Ed knows that as administrators and leaders on campus, spending time every summer reflecting on the previous academic year is important. In the May 2024 Student Voices survey, students expressed great things about their college experience, with 78% stating that their education prepares them for life after graduation. Yet, just over half of students (52%) say they have some trust in their institution's leadership. As we spend the summer planning for the 2024-2025 academic year, what is your institution doing to grow to better fit the needs of your students? https://lnkd.in/evyNbvq3

Superintendent Tenure: An Urgent Call to Action!!! I just read a story about a former colleague and successful superintendent being asked to step down. Unfortunately, this has NOTHING to do with student achievement or teacher retention, enrollment, or violence on a campus, but everything to do with politics. Recent data from sources, like AASA and others, show that superintendent turnover remains a pressing issue for districts across the country. On average, the tenure for superintendents is around 2-4 years, with notable variations based on district demographics and size. Superintendents in districts with high poverty levels or larger populations of students of color tend to have shorter tenures—often up to three years shorter than those in wealthier or majority-white districts. Women in the role also experience shorter tenures compared to their male counterparts(District Administration)(TASB). For black males, the tenure is two years, and for black women it is 1 and half years. For Latino/a superintendents the tenure is lower, but on average it is about the same as black leaders. Given these challenges, maintaining consistent leadership is crucial for ensuring district stability and student success, it is also critical to our profession. Sitting superintendents can greatly benefit from resources that support their leadership journey. Cognia, in partnership with AASA, offers robust and real solutions designed to extend superintendent tenures, promote deep relationships with community and political leaders, and provide ongoing professional development tailored to the unique needs of districts and their leadership teams. Now that you are in the seat, let us help you keep it and thrive internally and externally. It starts with a unique conference for superintendents and your board chair for 30 pairs. Contact me ASAP!

Reposting my work, The Lost Leadership: The Dangers of Alienating Black Men from Senior Leadership in Urban Public Schools — a topic more relevant now than ever. In today’s challenging educational landscape, diversity in leadership isn’t just a box to check. It’s a cornerstone for building resilient, culturally responsive learning environments. When Black men are absent from senior leadership roles in our urban public schools, we miss out on unique perspectives, mentorship for young Black males, and the benefits that diverse leadership brings to every student. For our education leaders and policymakers: Now is the time to champion policies that break down systemic barriers and actively invite Black men into senior leadership positions. We can start by: • Implementing targeted recruitment programs to bring qualified Black male educators into administrative roles. • Offering professional development opportunities that prepare Black male teachers for leadership. • Fostering mentorship programs where Black male leaders can guide others on their journey. • Creating inclusive policies that support and retain Black men in these critical roles. Let’s commit to building leadership that truly represents our communities. Together, we can create a future where every student sees themselves in their school’s leaders, empowering them to believe in what they can achieve.
If you’re ready to dive deep into the challenges of leadership in our urban schools and uncover the real reasons Black men are often left out of senior leadership, The Lost Leadership is a must-read. This book breaks down the hidden barriers, explores systemic issues, and calls for the change we need. It’s time to bring Black men back into the conversation. Pick up The Lost Leadership and join the movement for true leadership representation!

🚨 The Urgent Call for Diverse Leadership in Education 🚨 I’m excited to announce that my book, The Lost Leadership: The Dangers of Alienating Black Men from Senior Leadership in Urban Public Schools, is now available! In this book, I explore a critical issue facing our education system: the absence of Black men in leadership roles. This is more than just a gap — it’s a missed opportunity to inspire and uplift students who need to see themselves represented at the top. When Black men are alienated from leadership in our schools, we lose mentors, role models, and advocates who bring unique perspectives to the table. This book is a call to action for educators, policymakers, and community leaders to: • Create pathways for Black men to step into senior leadership • Mentor and support their development • Transform our schools into places where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired Our students deserve leaders who reflect their potential and their communities. Let’s work together to ensure that future generations see themselves in positions of power and influence. 🔗 Grab your copy on Amazon: https://a.co/d/eI3qga8 🔗 Also available on Barnes & Noble: https://lnkd.in/efhBEQ9p Your support can help change the future of leadership in education. Drew School (High School in SF) was described by students and administrators today on our counselor tour as a “hidden gem.” The question is why? The school recently shared a satisfaction survey of families revealing near perfect scores (97% -100%!) in areas from “challenge of the curriculum,” to “quality of teachers,” to “college placement.” It is also right on the 1 California bus line and smack in the middle of Pacific Heights. So, Drew is definitely not hidden, but it is ABSOLUTELY a gem! We met with the new amazing Head of School, encountered electric energy and heard from multiple senior leaders who are taking six rigorous honors classes, displaying no signs of stress or overwhelm. It doesn't end with incredible academics, administrators and teachers. Given the size and the philosophy of centering on teens, leadership opportunities abound and in a refreshing example of this, 80% of the information we received today was from “the source” - the students. Over ten busy teens took an hour with us to share their breadth of experience and outright love affair with their high school years at Drew. If you want your 8th grader to have a rigorous high school experience that doesn’t burn them out by senior year, it would be a huge missed opportunity not to consider this school. A "hidden gem"? Maybe now, but not for long. www.drewschool.org
