As it's National Inclusion Week this week, I'm sharing my name in the Race Equality Matters #MyNameIs campaign. Since I've shared my full name more widely, a lot of people now ask me if they can use it, and if I'm using it more. The answer is yes, if it's pronounced correctly! Otherwise it's not my name. See below for how to say it. And I shared it in my TEDxBrighton talk. I'll add a link. "Standing together as black and Asian women in the workplace can be empowering, but it's important to address the challenges we face head-on. As a community, we've encountered instances of racism and microaggressions, particularly from a white male micromanager. It's disheartening when our experiences are overlooked or dismissed. To my fellow black and Asian colleagues: your voices matter. It's crucial to support one another and speak up against injustice. Our unity is our strength, and together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable work environment. Let's continue to stand in solidarity and advocate for change. #Equality #Inclusion #Unity"

DIVERSITY? EQUALITY? INCLUSION? What does that even mean to your reality? Are we creating workplaces; marketplaces that do celebrate their Black People (Adults and children) and even going further at acknowledging that some shoes do not fit all. How fair and just are your policies and processes in your company?

Reflections on presenting on a webinar on 25 years of improving people's lives So this week, Marie Pye, and I with terrific support from Nathan Salmon and Cara Low put on a webinar on how much has changed since 1998. I learnt so much from the process of putting it together - there have been massive changes, many of which we now take for granted: accessible buses, equal rights for LGBTQI plus people, much greater representation of under-represented groups in different professions and the arts. We do have much more to do but we should be thinking if things have changed so much since 1998, we can do more. Our research gave me a response to this is all 'woke' nonsense. No, it isn't, people working on equality issues have made real, tangible differences and have changed people's lives for the better. If you would like to see the recording of the webinar, subscribe to the EW Group's newsletter and ask for a copy. We would also be open for running the webinar at different events. As Race Equality Week enters its second day, it prompts us to contemplate the impact of representation. Representation is the bedrock of diversity and inclusivity, offering individuals from various backgrounds the chance to see themselves reflected in society. This visibility fosters a deep sense of belonging and empathy, challenging stereotypes and biases along the way. Maybe that's why me and and my family do a wee happy dance every time we see the Sikh uncle on East Enders. Yet, for many of us from Black, Ethnic, and Minority backgrounds, being the sole representative in social or professional circles is not uncommon. We are the representation. Despite the odds, individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds have shattered barriers, demonstrating that potential transcends the constraints of visibility. They are the principle that one can indeed be what they cannot see! As we advocate for greater representation, let us also embrace the notion that we can become the very representation we seek. By doing so, we not only empower ourselves but also pave the way for others to follow in our footsteps.
