News! LanzaJet and LanzaTech are teaming up to launch CirculAir™, a breakthrough solution that converts waste, carbon, and renewable power into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF). This joint offering combines the groundbreaking technologies of LanzaJet and LanzaTech to transform nearly any waste or carbon resource into drop-in SAF.    With CirculAir, we can turn a wide range of waste materials—such as municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, recycled carbon from industrial processes, and even CO2 from the air—into SAF that will reduce aviation emissions by 85% to carbon negative. LanzaTech and LanzaJet have introduced CirculAir, an innovative initiative aimed at transforming waste, carbon, and renewable power into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This breakthrough offering provides a cost-effective and commercialized alternative to Fischer-Tropsch technology, creating eFuels, power-to-liquids, and waste-to-fuels using an already ASTM-approved SAF production pathway. This pathway leverages ethanol as the bio-intermediate and alcohol-to-jet technology to produce SAF and renewable diesel. “CirculAir brings to market a revolutionary, integrated pathway to convert carbon and waste inventories across our global society, as well as the ability to utilize emerging renewable power supply and CO2 through direct air capture as an economical and commercially viable approach to creating SAF,” said Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet. CirculAir utilizes technology to convert various waste materials into SAF on a large scale. Feedstocks include municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, factory emissions, and CO2 captured directly from the air. 🎉 Our 2024 New Year's Resolution: Support a Sustainable Future! 🎉 Like many of you, we’re setting our priorities and making our resolutions for the year ahead. But don’t worry, we have every intention of keeping ours, because the goals we’ve set have important consequences – for all Canadians and for the planet as a whole!   We resolve to continue our momentum from recent years around carbon reduction. In 2023, we put our first electric trucks on the road, announced an unprecedented renewable energy purchase in Alberta, and more. Looking ahead, we’ll step-up our efforts, by engaging vendors and suppliers to #JoinTheCarbonFight and help us achieve our Scope 3 objectives.   We resolve to introduce even more innovative plastic packaging solutions, on the road to making all of our control brand and in-store plastic packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025. In 2023, we got more than halfway to our goal… this year we’ll push ourselves even further!   We resolve to waste as little food as possible, as we work to send zero food waste to landfill by 2030. We already have great partnerships in place, with organizations like ZooShare Biogas Ltd. and Loop Resource Inc. We look forward to building on these partnerships in 2024!     Lots of effort will be needed to make these resolutions a reality. Here at ISL we have seen an uptick in route optimisation consultancy projects as a result of the Simpler Recycling initiative, specifically, how to manage new and/or expanded #foodwaste collection with current fleets. In Germany one of our route optimisation clients is trialing hydrogen RCVs. Hydrogen vehicles have the potential to be effective in the collection of food waste, especially when compared to electric #RCVs, but their effectiveness depends on several factors. Range and Payload Capacity: Hydrogen vehicles need to have sufficient range and payload capacity to collect food waste from various locations without needing frequent refueling or emptying. Infrastructure: The availability of #hydrogen refueling stations is crucial for the effectiveness of hydrogen vehicles. Without a well-developed refueling infrastructure, hydrogen vehicles may face challenges in completing their collection routes. For local authorities, allocating space within their depots is key. Cost: The cost of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen fuel compared to traditional diesel vehicles as well as electric ones can impact their effectiveness in food waste collection. If the cost of owning and operating hydrogen vehicles is significantly higher, it may affect their widespread adoption in waste management fleets. Many of the current hydrogen RCVs being trialed on the continent are funded through EU R&D schemes so there is no true cost figures upon which to make a judgement. One thing to bear in mind though is to ensure the true, end-to-end costs are considered when comparing electric with hydrogen as well as the impact on the environment, ie, the fuel energy creation has to be considered. Environmental Benefits: One of the main advantages of hydrogen vehicles is their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially if the hydrogen is produced from renewable sources. If the goal of food waste collection is to minimize environmental impact, using hydrogen vehicles can align with that objective. Hydrogen vehicles can be effective in the collection of food waste, especially when paired with a well-developed infrastructure and when considering their environmental benefits. However, their effectiveness may vary depending on specific circumstances and factors such as range, payload capacity, infrastructure, and cost. The trials of hydrogen RCVs in the UK and on the continent are on-going and only time will tell if they are truly cost effective. Unfortunately, we expect that analysis to be available too late for the onset of England wide food waste collection services.
