Why did I quit public education? For some people, leaving is about student behavior and lack of support from admin. Others leave because of the bad wages. For some, it's because of burnout, exhaustion, and spending more time with other people's kids than their own. I could have probably handled all of those things. What I couldn't handle were the systems in place that actively kept me from accomplishing my job with absolute excellence. This year, my seventh graders' initial assessment indicated that they averaged at a third grade ELA level. Worse than that, I had fifteen kids who scored below a first grade level in reading. First grade, if you don't know, is when you learn how to read. Scoring below a first grade level in reading meant that these students literally didn't know how to sound out the words. I went to my principal and offered to keep those 15 students after school and start a "reading club" where I could help them practice. Her response? "Oh... we're not gonna teach those kids how to read." I stared at her. "We're... a school, aren't we?" "Yeah, that sounded bad. What I meant to say is that we can't water down our classroom curriculum to try and bring up our low flyers." "But, if it's after school..." "We don't really have the funding for after school activities." This was the moment I knew I had to get out of the system. I can deal with bad behaviors. I can persevere through burnout. But actively contributing to the illiteracy rate as an ELA teacher? No thanks. ✌

In honor of teacher appreciation week, some thoughts: I see lots and lots of non-teachers arguing VERY LOUDLY that the key is to pay teachers more. Are many teachers underpaid? Sure. (Especially in ECE) Does everybody wish they were better paid, regardless of their profession? Just about! But higher pay won’t solve the teacher exodus crisis because low pay isn’t causing the teacher exodus crisis. Teachers have been underpaid for a very long time. People leaving the profession now *knew* that when they joined it. That reality hardly caught anyone by surprise. Teachers deserve higher pay, sure, no question. But teachers NEED better support, the opportunity for work-life boundaries, autonomy, and respect. (Among other things - I’ve been out of the classroom for long enough that I’m happily somewhat out of touch.) Pay is important. It’s not enough.

To all the Teacher Career Moms working through your children's upbringing... 🌹 It's not easy being there for your own children, making sure dinner's ready and the laundry's done, handling personal concerns, and stealing five minutes for yourself at night before jumping into the same routine 6 a.m. the following day...weekends often included... This is a picture of me from two years ago when my son graduated with his associate's degree alongside his high school diploma May '22. 🎓 Getting my own child through dual credit courses during the throes of the pandemic in a state that passed legislation in fall of 2020 that said districts weren't responsible for teachers who got sick or passed away...was by far the toughest time in my life. We all had to make individual decisions about how to survive a dark time in history. This time for me, meant major career shifts and life changes that I never saw coming, and it took everything I had to be the bridge my son could cross while he grappled with reality and isolation. *This time surpassed working 80-hour weeks to earn an EdD while teaching full-time at the school district and part-time online. *It surpassed the year I worked under an alcoholic principal and lost my classroom. *It surpassed the year I taught the most medically fragile student in the school district and administration turned against me. It included the fall of 2020 when I went solely online, jumping from senior high school English to a brand new elementary position in a school where I'd been established 12 years...and where a new principal marked me unsatisfactory across all areas of professionalism 10 days into the job and before I ever met with students. This Mother's Day I reflect on the choices I have made as an educator. And how hard it was some years even when my son was young, to uphold both rigorous school demands and heartless expectations while being a good parent. My students have always been my world. But so has my own son. No one could be more important than that relationship. And when you have to make decisions to save your job, keep your job, please your job, against caring for your own family, this is the worst kind of conflict as a teacher. How do we do it? How do we keep that balance and harmony so we feel good as mothers, as parents, while we work in public school classrooms that often offer little support or gratitude? We get creative. No one will ever know the behind-the scenes decisions I have made to put my family first despite the grueling grind of being a teacher 10 months out of the calendar year for three decades, punching in and out, and doing my best work with students so they have greater tools and more opportunities because hopefully, I was positively influential in their worlds. Enough already. Scrap Ofsted and its long outmoded - and harmful indicators of ''quality'' education. Of course, Ofsted stands by its archaic and out-of-touch practice, claiming that ''we look at all the things that are important to parents, including the quality of the education, behaviour and how safely and well the school is run.'' Eeeeeeeeeeeeeerm NO. They refer to ''behaviour'' from the behaviour management perspective. A perspective which has led to a celebration of zero tolerance to children's behaviour. Police presence in schools, exclusions and public shaming. Perhaps if Ofsted ever truly listened - or cared, they would permit teachers to focus more on co-regulating emotions and behaviours, as opposed to reprimanding and punishing them. This simply demonstrates their sheer ignorance. ''Important to parents'' - yet Ofsted encourages the punishment/fining of parents of those children (140,000 of them) who are unable to access school-based education because it is just so unbearable for SEND children and those exposed to adverse experiences. If Ofsted cared one jot, it would have prioritised children's MENTAL HEALTH and emotional wellbeing over academic outcomes and accountability. A headteacher took her own life because of Ofsted and still - NOTHING changed. Ah yes, they appointed Oliver - who promised to ''clamp down on attendance and behaviour''! Dangerous, clueless jokers. In an announcement that shocks NO ONE who is alt certed, teachers who *just start teaching* do as well as those that go through prep programs. When I did my alt-cert, my mandated course work in education did jack-all-nothing to support me in my classroom. Teaching is more like a trade job than a professional cert field: you learn your trade from the mentors in the room (and in the online groups). While many people may decry the recent shifts in public policy that loosen the requirements to teach, I'm actually pretty okay with it. -> You don't need a masters to teach high school. -> You don't need a bachelors to teach middle school or elementary. In Higher Ed, there's this idea that you need one step past the degree you're teaching. Wanna teach an AA/AS program? Need a BA/BS. Wanna teach a BS? Need an MS. That means for HS, you should need an AS. The top skills needed for teaching, skills like project management, people management, and crisis management, are all 20-40 hour prep courses. (Which - fun fact - not a SINGLE ONE are taught in prep programs.) Issue I See: If we lower the cert requirements, states are going to lower the pay. Teaching already makes less than working at Walmart or Target; we can't make it even less and expect people to do it. Teaching is a grueling, demanding job (both mentally and physically) and deserves a pay that compensates for the emotional, physical, and psychological danger teachers place themselves in every day. All teachers are valid. If you're willing to walk into a classroom, you get my FULL support. I don't care what your academic papers say.
