“In the past, our perspectives and voices weren’t really being heard or considered in the personnel committees the city used to do. With this contract, we’ve finally been heard, and I’m proud of the work that our bargaining team has done.” – Pete Torigoe, a wastewater treatment plant mechanic, for the city of Salisbury, Maryland.

In a move welcomed by trade union Oekdy-Sek, the government has announced the extension of the forest firefighting season from six to eight months. This initiative, effective April 1, aims to bolster the island's preparedness for forest fires. Additionally, select stations will now maintain year-round staffing with forest firefighters. During the off-season, a reduced workforce will operate at 50% capacity across six to eight stations, ensuring coverage of forested regions. Should the risk of fire escalate due to weather conditions, staffing levels will be adjusted accordingly. Oekdy-Sek's general secretary, Giorgos Constantinou, highlighted that participation in off-season shifts will be on a voluntary basis, requiring written consent from those interested. The arrangement promises equal distribution of working hours among participants. The decision follows persistent advocacy by forest firefighters and union members, leading to earlier staffing this year, which has already enhanced response times, coordination, equipment management, and training. The agreement reflects months of discussions and a recent meeting with government and stakeholders, marking a significant step forward in the island's forest fire management strategy.#Cyprus
