“Our governor and his yes men in the legislature thought that when they passed the most anti-union, anti-worker legislation in Florida history … that we would just sit down and shut up. That just made us want to work even harder to show AFSCME members don’t just give up because it is hard.” – Joe Simmons Jr., president of Local 871 (AFSCME Florida).

As posted in Shelburne's community business newsletter, too. Town Manager Matt’s 124 words in 2024: April 17 Today begins the Town’s negotiations for renewal of our collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. AFSCME is the nation’s largest public sector union, with 3,400 councils across 46 states. I look forward to working together for a stronger, healthier community. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest report counts 14.4 million American workers in unions, exactly 10.0% of the total labor force. This is down from 17.7 million unionized workers in 1983, 20.1% of the total. Today’s union membership is pretty evenly split between public sector (7.0 million) and private sector (7.4 million). Vermont’s unionization rate is 14.3%, above average but lower than New York. The job sectors with the greatest union membership are teaching/library, and police/corrections.

🚨 Attention Maine Business Owners! 🚨 Recently, the Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) has gained new enforcement powers with the implementation of the Act to Increase Enforcement and Accountability for Wage Violations. This critical change empowers the MDOL to order employers to pay back wages, liquidated damages, and interest directly to workers who have been underpaid. ⚠️ What This Means for You: The MDOL can now require employers to pay three times the amount a worker was underpaid, plus interest. Previously, wage recovery required a court judgment or a settlement agreement. Now, the MDOL has the authority to enforce these payments directly. 💡 Why It Matters: ✔️Ensuring compliance with wage laws is more crucial than ever. ✔️The law aims to protect low-paid workers, reduce illegal wage theft, and create a level playing field for all businesses. For more details on Maine’s labor laws and how this new law could impact your business, visit Maine Department of Labor website. Stay informed, stay compliant, and ensure your employees receive the wages they’ve earned. #MaineBusiness #LaborLaw #Compliance #SmallBusiness #WageLaw #MaineEconomy

A federal judge in Texas has blocked the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) sweeping ban on non-compete agreements, which would have impacted 30 million American workers across various industries. The ruling halts the FTC's attempt to protect workers' job mobility and wage potential, citing that the agency overstepped its authority. The FTC is considering an appeal, continuing the fight to end non-competes that limit economic freedom and growth. The decision is seen as a win for businesses, but the debate over non-competes and their impact on workers is far from over.
