Black in White Ltd launched its 4th Black in White poetry book, “Her locks unveiled”, a week ago at Barnet Council's offices in Colindale. The atmosphere was electric and empowering, as some of the winning and highly commended poets from the 2023 Black in White Poetry Competition read their powerful and emotive poems about experiences of racism in the workplace and in childhood.
We heard from the Deputy Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Councillor Tony Vourou, on why Black History Month is important to the Council, and Associate Professor Dr. Marvelle Brown shared her perspectives on why we need to be informed, inspired and intentional about being anti-racist. A raffle raised £260 to support the work of Unitas, Barnet Youth Zone, and we enjoyed three very different but equally brilliant musical artists who performed live on the night.
Two of the competition judges, Peju "The Spark" Abuchi IAMB and Serena Malcolm – both poets themselves – read their poems from the new book. The evening concluded with the Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Charlotte Shyllon, reading three of her poems from different books in the Black in White series.
