I want to share a recent experience that I found extractive and woefully symbolic of how much change we need in the nonprofit conversation community. The organization I founded hosts an annual Women in Conservation Summit. The multi-day program offers expert panels, empowered keynotes, and training workshops in grant writing, communications, storytelling, and fishing skills, all led by women. Men are welcome too, to refine their approaches for empowering women in conservation. A woman from a major nonprofit expected us to fund her entire trip to our summit, despite our small budget. Her org over $30 million / ours under $80k. This is woefully extractive and should not have occurred, especially in a time where #GESI #JEDI #EDI and all these concepts seem central to our collective work. Here's some suggestions if you happen to discount the value of emerging events and initiatives. 1. You have to pay to attend and present in most conferences. This is the norm and is expected given the resources that go into creating these events. 2. Think about context. When you ask a small brown women led organization to fund your entire trip to present in a summit, you are asking for that org to prioritize you over the program beneficiaries. 3. Think more equitably about how you use your budget and invest your time. A smart approach may be to segment some investment to small grassroots events while you continue to still spend your money on attending giant well funded BINGO events. Invest in grassroots events alongside large ones to promote equity. Let's diversity our focus from investing in established events to also prioritizing emerging initiatives to create an inclusive conservation community. We should stop seeing BINGO events as investments and everything else as an expense. These two different types of network platforms are what will bring equity to life in the work you do! Today during the #TNOCFestival2024, we will launch the "Manifesto on the Governance of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture" developed in the context of the GenerACTOR cooperation project (funded by the European Union) https://lnkd.in/ehwBpP3B The promoters of this Manifesto include the coordinator Anci Lazio, the Association of Municipalities of Lazio, Risorse per Roma (in-house company of Roma Capitale), the Alcaldía Distrital de Barranquilla (Colombia) and SiembraMás, an organization that deals with recovery programs environmental in both urban and rural areas; Replay Network aps, a non-profit organization specialised in training and in particular in promoting the professional path of the #Gardeniser. Everyone is involved to strengthen the community approach to urban and peri-urban gardens, improving resilience and enhancing common goods. The Manifesto represents a commitment to promote equitable, sustainable and participatory governance of urban and peri-urban agriculture in Latin America and around the world. Its implementation requires the collaboration of local governments, non-governmental organizations, universities, urban and peri-urban agriculture operators and citizens. How Volunteers Build Social Capital    As Volunteer Week (16-23 June) draws closer, we’ve been thinking about social capital.     Social capital refers to the network of connections and shared values that enable cooperation, trust, and participation. When volunteers come together for a common cause, they build relationships, share knowledge, and foster a sense of belonging.    A study by University of Auckland* researchers Rose Gerelemou, James Russell, and Margaret Stanley investigated the connection between social group participation and social capital. The study found that members of community groups, particularly conservation groups, had higher social capital than those who didn’t participate in such groups.    Annie Dignan, General Manager of Pest Free Kaipātiki believes “that this research into the value of volunteering in conservation articulates what we experience amongst our volunteer network - the feel-good factors of social connections, shared purpose and a sense of belonging.”    This research highlights the value of fostering social capital through volunteerism. 🌱 Weaving a Stronger Community Fabric: Our Summer of Connection and Collaboration After a Spring of growth, our flower has bloomed, attracting partnerships, relationships, and networks packed with potential for positive change. We've been handcrafting the social infrastructure to ensure that the grassroots efforts in our rural community are no longer overlooked or under-supported. Over the past few months, we’ve reached nearly every corner of our bioregion, engaging with well over 100 organisations and 200 individuals. We've strengthened connections with local businesses, grassroots organisations, and individuals eager to get involved. We've also engaged in crucial conversations with national and international networks and funders on how best to support grassroots change. 💬 Highlights: Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with Sustainable Dorset, mentoring young environmental volunteers, and starting to engage with Transition Groups across the South West. Supporting Local Initiatives: From local art takeovers to building town-based funding models, we’re working arm in arm with incredible local businesses and organisations to support the resilience of our community. Exploring New Metaphors: We’re using the concept of compound interest to reimagine community-building efforts, amplifying positive change through stronger relationships and networks.
