Maersk names first large ‘methanol-enabled’ vessel as liner sector braces for onslaught The delivery of AP Moller-Maersk’s first large methanol-enabled vessel shows where the industry is headed this year. Maersk christened the 16,000-teu Ane Maersk at a private ceremony today in the shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The vessel was named after Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, chair of the AP Moller Foundation and AP Moller Holding. While many of the accolades will be for the vessel’s green credentials, the delivery symbolises a threat to the boxship sector with the onslaught of hundreds of newbuildings ordered during the boom years of the pandemic. Those deliveries are racking up. In the first three weeks of the year, shipping lines received 204,000 teu of capacity from yards, according to Alphaliner estimates. That amounts to more than one ship per day joining the global liner fleet. While vessels such as the Ane Maersk grab the limelight, it is the Danish company’s 2M partner MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company that could have a bigger market impact. In a ceremony held in Yokohama, #Japan today, the world's second large #methanol-enabled container vessel was named "Astrid Mærsk". Mrs. Liza Uchida, spouse of Nissan Motor Corporation CEO Makoto Uchida served as godmother and christened the vessel. “Astrid Mærsk” is the second of A.P. Moller - Maersk’s 18 large methanol-enabled vessels, scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025. This new fleet series is expected to significantly contribute to Maersk's net-zero targets and support customers in achieving their #decarbonization goals. The name giving ceremony took place in Daikoku Pier Cruise Terminal in #Yokohama city, where public audience could also register and get onboard for a vessel visit. Maersk has set a science-based Net-Zero #greenhouse gas #emissions target for 2040 across the entire business and has also established tangible and ambitious near-term targets for 2030 to ensure significant progress. The company will equip 25 of its container vessels with dual-fuel engines capable of sailing on #greenmethanol. Among these vessels are the feeder vessel “Laura Mærsk”, deployed in the intra-Europe trade in September 2023, and “Ane Mærsk”, a large 16,000 TEU green fuel-powered container vessel deployed in the Asia-Europe trade in January 2024. Congratulations to all those involved in the development of Höegh Autoliners' Höegh Aurora, the world's largest pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessel, which is set to embark on its maiden voyage, following on from its delivery and naming ceremony this week. The newbuild ship, the first of 12 in the shipping company’s Aurora class, has been constructed with DNV’s ammonia-ready and methanol-ready notations, meaning it is capable of running on either of these alternative fuels when they become more widely available. Designed by Deltamarin and built by China Merchants Heavy Industry, the Aurora class vessels are said to be one of the world’s most environmentally friendly PCTCs, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 10,000 MT of CO2 in one year (tank-to-wake) and around 6,200 MT CO2eq (well-to-wake). Norwegian shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has declared options to build four more of its next-generation Shaper Class pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessels in China. The 9,300 CEU vessels will be able to run on methanol, while being ready for conversion to ammonia as soon as the fuel is available "in a safe and secure manner", Offshore Energy reports.   This latest commitment brings the total number of Shaper Class vessels currently on order at Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) to eight. Wallenius Wilhelmsen also retains further options.   The first of the Shaper Class vessels already ordered are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2026. The four additional vessels under the declared options are scheduled for delivery between May and November 2027.   According to the company, these next-generation vessels will play a key role in the introduction of Wallenius Wilhelmsen's net-zero emissions end-to-end service by 2027.
