Monopiles have been the preferred foundation type for offshore wind turbines, but as turbines get larger and move into deeper water, handling and installation can become more difficult. ❗Increased risks of both refusal and pile run can also present unexpected challenges during piling operations. In addition, anvil sizes are reaching their limit and hence less efficient piling arrangements are required which adds to the mounting challenges.❗ 🌊 What are the solutions to meet the challenges of larger turbines in deeper water? Ensuring a rock-solid foundation for offshore wind farms is essential. While grouting plays a pivotal role during construction, ongoing maintenance is equally vital to safeguard the foundation's integrity. Unlike bolted connections, grout is a one-time deal; it stays put and even grows stronger with time. However, regular inspections of the entire foundation and wind turbine are a must. 🕵️♂️ Monitoring loads, vibration, fatigue stress, temperature, and corrosion allow for timely repairs and reinforcements. Discover the versatile applications of grout as a repair tool beyond its initial use in this article 🌬️🔍: https://hubs.ly/Q027wWh70

One of the most common shortcomings when it comes to off-shore wind turbine installation are deep waters. The traditional fixed-bottom turbine designs are not feasible; however, an innovative solution has been found. That is, Floating Wind Turbines. In-short, the foundation types are spar-buoy which is a long and cylindrical structure that extends in deep waters and relies on ballast for stability. Semi-submersible which is a platform with multiple columns connected by horizontal beams that float on water which uses both buoyancy and mooring lines for stability is another foundation type for floating wind turbines. Lastly, the Tension-leg platform which is a buoyant structure that is anchored to the seabed with taut and vertical tendons ensuring minimal vertical movement and provides great stability in rough sea conditions. Furthermore, the wind turbine structure continues with the turbine being mounted on the floating foundation which consists of a rotor, nacelle, and tower. As for the mooring and anchoring, the floating platform is anchored to the seabed using mooring lines despite it being made of chains, steel cables, or synthetic materials. The mooring system allows the floating platform to slightly move with the wind or waves while keeping it in position still. The power transmission process begins after the electricity is generated by the wind turbine then it gets transmitted to an offshore substation via undersea cable which is later transmitted to an onshore grid. #InnovationInEnergy #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #WindEnergy

The monopile has proven itself to be the most cost-effective foundation type for offshore Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) with more than 80% of all the WTGs installed worldwide being installed on a monopile foundation. In Europe alone, nearly 5,000 WTG monopiles were installed offshore by 2023. Although a few years ago it was expected that monopiles would no longer be used in water depths over 30 meter, ongoing development has shown that monopiles are now even being installed in water depths up to 50 meter, which still offers a huge potential for this type of foundation. Further research projects are ongoing to extend even this limit. Larger WTGs, which will certainly come, also require larger monopiles, currently foreseen to become over 2,500 tons in weight, over 100 meter in length with diameters at the foot of more than 12 meter and at the top over 9 meter. Why use the CAPE Vibro Lifting Technology for XXL monopile installation? - Upending, lifting and driving in single operation - Low noise emissions - Eliminate pile run/drop fall - Combination with Dynamic Positioning - fastest method - No gripper or installation frame - Significant reduced cycle time - No diameter limitation Find more about XXL monopile installation and the related challenges here: https://lnkd.in/eyif_U5e CAPE Holland PROUDLY PART OF Venterra Group
