Let's move beyond diversity: join our Race Equity Series Following the launch of the first Home Truths report, we have talked to hundreds of people in civil society about the need for serious action to tackle civil society’s racism problem. But we have also tried to ensure that as we do our talking, we also do plenty of listening. In particular, to identify the sticking points to taking serious and transformative action against racism and for race equity. As a result, we have put together a Race Equity Series with individual themes focussed on where we heard a need in mainstream civil society for clarification and guidance to overcome blockages to progress and to support transformative change on anti-racism and race equity. Our attitude towards truth and justice, coupled with critical thinking and altruism, forms the bedrock of a just and compassionate society. Here's why fostering a positive attitude towards these values, along with critical thinking and altruism, is essential: Respect for Truth Embracing truth requires us to value honesty, integrity, and transparency in all aspects of life. It means acknowledging facts, seeking evidence-based knowledge, and rejecting falsehoods and misinformation. Critical thinking enables us to analyze information objectively, discern truth from falsehood, and make informed decisions based on evidence and reason. Commitment to Justice A commitment to justice compels us to advocate for fairness, equality, and accountability. It means standing up against injustice, discrimination, and oppression wherever they occur. Critical thinking allows us to question the status quo, challenge systemic injustices, and work towards creating a more just and equitable society. Altruism motivates us to act in the best interests of others, especially those who are marginalized or oppressed, contributing to the promotion of social justice and human rights. Promotion of Social Harmony Attitudes of truth and justice, coupled with critical thinking and altruism, foster social harmony by promoting empathy, compassion, and solidarity among individuals and communities. Critical thinking encourages us to consider diverse perspectives, engage in constructive dialogue, and find common ground with others. Altruism inspires acts of kindness, generosity, and selflessness, creating a sense of community and mutual support. Empowerment and Liberation Embracing truth and justice, alongside critical thinking and altruism, empowers individuals to challenge oppressive systems and advocate for positive change. Critical thinking enables us to question authority, challenge unjust laws and policies, and envision alternative solutions to social problems. Altruism motivates us to use our privilege and resources to uplift others, amplifying marginalized voices and working towards collective liberation. By fostering attitudes of truth and justice, alongside critical thinking and altruism, we can build a society that values integrity, fairness, and compassion. I’m very proud of getting to this point with Home Truths 2 - we are now open for applications to Further, Faster - a pioneering movement for a significant number of CEOs and senior leaders in civil society ready and committed to create a movement to rapidly create momentum in taking concrete action on creating an anti racist future for civil society. Excuse the following essay, but I’ve a lot to say! Time to put our money where our mouth is and invest resources in shifting the dial - we need to see results and be part of creating hope and showing that people and their will are at the heart of achieving progress to overcome institutional barriers. Positive energy is needed. This is ambitious and untested - to my knowledge never before has there been an attempt by a smallish membership organisation such as ACEVO to attempt to run a programme of this size and for non members too - to influence concrete and rapid change and inspire action through a facilitated learning programme focused on action- not just warm words. It demands a lot from applicants, financial and time commitments and it won’t be an easy ride, but one filled with hope, agency and action. Leaders will be led through this programme by experts JMB Consulting and Social Justice Collective , appointed following a competitive tender and who have designed this bespoke programme with meticulous care and attention to detail. Course fees will be used to pay for the expert facilitation. In line with the aims of the programme, the desire is to challenge the status quo of funds flowing to support majority white leaders to learn about anti racism and instead to ensure funding flows directly to black and minoritised ethnicity led organisations to adequately recompense them for needing to educate and build capacity.
