How do you position for a role (or project) that you are uniquely qualified for?
Answering "What do you do?" is difficult for many leaders, especially if you have gone through roles across industries and domains and had tremendous opportunities to learn, grow, create results, and develop more leaders.
Yes, we can always come up with that perfect elevator pitch, but that will be a watered-down, bland version of what you can potentially do.
Instead, an easier option would be to understand what is essential for the other person, see the opportunities, challenges, and possibilities, and explore opportunities to work together if there is a substantial overlap with your capabilities and interests.
But, though easy, that takes time and effort to build a relationship and create a platform to showcase your expertise.
As we get to higher-level roles, this effort will be worth it, as the result would be a unique leadership position with strength-aligned responsibilities or an impactful project opportunity (if consulting).
Anything else you are attempting with a throw-it-across-the-wall strategy, hoping it sticks.
But this is harder and takes a few attempts. Most often, it is best to tailor the message to the audience.
