The messaging behind #NationalReuseMonth ties perfectly into the ethos of Leave No Trace - we want to protect our environment by taking less from it and protecting what we have. In some of our recently surveyed litter picks, the main material categories of litter collected were Plastic, Polystyrene, and Wood. Across all materials, five single-use items that we found to be pervasive were: 1. Disposable Coffee Cups 2. Plastic Wrappers 3. Plastic Cutlery / Straws 4. Water Bottles 5. Plastic Bags Items on this list can take anywhere from 80 years to 1 million years to break down, leaving trace elements in our ecosystems 🌱 Our #SimpleAction this week for #ReuseMonth is: if there are any items on the list that you use on a regular basis, see if there is a more sustainable swap you can make to help protect our environment ♻️

Discarded plastic fishing lines entangle turtles and seabirds, and plastic pieces of all sizes choke and clog the stomachs of creatures who mistake it for food, from tiny zooplankton to whales. Plastic is now entering every level of the ocean food chain and is even ending up in the seafood on our plates. Our planet can no longer tolerate a culture of throw-away plastics. Single-use plastics are filling up our landfills, choking our rivers, and contaminating our oceans. For far too long, corporations have put the onus on all of us to deal with their own failed design problem. 🏠 Affordable housing and plastic homes. Sounds like a techno-tale of the modern age. Or a title of a cheap barbieworld ad. But in fact, this is our real world. And not even sometime far in the future. Our homes are already made of plastic to an extent we seldom notice or acknowledge. Plastic windows, electrical wire insulation, plastic floors, plastic fridge, plastic food containers in the fridge, plastic in our salt and even in us (according to recent studies, it’s in the human bloodstream and even male testicles)… So what’s next? Even animal homes now incorporate plastic. It is found in bird nests. Many marine organisms live on the floating plastic debris. Hermit crabs use plastic caps instead of seashells as their portable, carry-on homes. Plastic is omnipotent, omnipresent and… affordable! Yay! But again, what’s next? Chapter 3 of Plastic Soldier (a cross-breed between climate fiction and sci-fi dystopia) shows such a future from the standpoint of the social outcasts who can’t afford a living and have to live in trash. The New Years celebrations got me thinking about glitter. I love glitter but it has a not-so-shiny impact on our planet. Did you know that traditional glitter is often made from microplastics that can wreak havoc on our environment? From oceans to soil, these tiny particles pose a serious threat to wildlife and ecosystems. They're so light, blow everywhere, are impossible to clean up entirely. Even washing clothes with glitter will add microplastics into our drinking water. We can still add some sparkle to our lives without harming the Earth. Consider switching to eco-friendly alternatives like biodegradable glitter made from plant-based materials. It's a win-win – you get the glitz without the guilt. There's even edible kinds. Could you commit to a glitter free existence? I know microplastics are an area of growing awareness for many people, but I don't don't know how many people have made the connection to glitter yet. This assemblage of a snowy egret is a reminder that we need to protect our environment. It's made of non-recyclable trash and repurposed materials sewn onto a photo canvas. The underlying photograph is one that I took while visiting Florida wetlands. Plastic is a large part of our everyday life, even when we avoid using plastic bags and plastic bottles. Foam packaging peanuts for shipping, food packaging, meat/poultry trays, and egg cartons are typically made with polystyrene. This petroleum-based product affects wildlife and humans alike. We must be mindful of our actions and their environmental impact. What are you doing to reduce your plastic use? How can we as an individual help save our planet ? On world Earth day there is no doubt our planet is heading towards clinate change. This is the biggest challenge of our lifetimes. Each one of us can do whatever little we can to help. Here are just a few pointers- 1) Carry a bottle of water with you when you head out. Really helps when we don’t have to buy plastic bottles. 2) If we are not sure where to order food from , pick restaurants that have eco friendly packaging or less plastic. 3) Try to reuse or repurpose the plastic containers. 4) I use ink pens mostly so I don’t have to keep throwing out plastic pens. 5) Bamboo toothbrushes instead of plastic ones. 6) Carry a bag . We usually ensure one bag is kept in the car. 7) Plant at least one plant/ tree for a special occasion. Happy Earth day. Do your bit. It’s not too late.
