He asked customers in an Illinois cafe, how much they’d pay for a chocolate brownie. He used the same brownies, but presented them in different contexts. First, he showed customers a brownie on a napkin – customers were prepared to pay 53p He showed another group the brownie on a paper plate – customers were prepared to pay 76p Then he showed another group the brownie on a porcelain plate with a dusting of icing sugar – customers said they’d pay £1.27 This shows the importance of design and aesthetics in driving up perceived value.
