Defining the IoT

- [Instructor] The Internet of Things represents billions of devices, collecting and exchanging data. In this segment, we'll discover the components that make up the IoT. The Internet of Things has several elements that include devices, processes, data, infrastructure, and people. Let's talk about each of these starting with the devices. IoT devices include a range of everyday objects such as thermostats, wearable fitness trackers, home automation systems, and cameras. The devices collect and exchange data using nodes, sensors, and controllers. IoT operating systems are streamlined with minimal processing and memory, and are designed to perform a specific task such as monitoring temperature, or recording video. Processes manage the way people, infrastructure, things, and data all work together. The logic is similar to an OODA loop, which is a cycle of observe, orient, decide, and act. For example, when a car crosses the middle lane on a highway, the sensor will send an audible alert to get back into the correct lane. IoT devices gather data from humans to machine, from machine to machine, or machine to humans through sensors. The data is then transmitted to a central gateway and then to the cloud, which can provide more advanced data processing. The IoT infrastructure is the underlying technology and systems that enables the operation of IoT devices and applications. The infrastructure includes hardware components such as sensors, gateways, and servers, along with software components such as operating systems, platforms, and cloud services. People are what drives the Internet of Things and includes consumers, businesses, and governments, which use the devices in their homes, cars, cities, and buildings. Today, the world is only beginning to see the value and potential impact of the Internet of Things in our everyday lives. By 2026, industry experts predict a market size of more than a trillion dollars. This means a future where everyday things all interconnect with the goal of improving overall quality of life. Now, let's test your knowledge. The Internet of Things represents billions of devices collecting and exchanging data. Discuss the components that make up the IoT. You can record your answer on the Challenge worksheet.
