Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of English

Applications are being accepted for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English at Anderson University. We are looking for an innovative educator with a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The teaching load will include 24 credit hours over the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-25 academic year, comprised of first-year composition courses and upper division English courses that support three majors: literary studies, language arts teaching, and writing.

Teaching

  • Develop and deliver a range of courses, including:
    • First year composition courses, focusing on writing fundamentals, critical thinking, and research skills.
    • Upper-division American or Later British literature courses, specializing in a particular area of expertise.
    • Advanced writing courses, fostering students' development in specific writing genres or research methods.
  • Utilize engaging and effective teaching methods to promote student learning and intellectual curiosity.
  • Foster an inclusive classroom environment that respects diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
Advising And Mentoring

  • Advise undergraduate English majors, guiding them through course selection, career exploration, and academic success.
  • Offer mentorship opportunities to support student research projects and professional development.

Scholarship And Service

  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees to contribute to academic governance and program development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and learning outcomes assessment.
  • Stay current with advancements in the field of English language and literature.

Additional Assignments

  • Follow the established guidelines of the First Year Writing Program, including required course materials, essay requirements, and appropriate feedback on student drafts.
  • Hold at least 8 weekly office hours in which students can schedule meetings.
  • Participate in meetings and other activities sponsored by the Department of English and Modern Languages.
  • Attend chapel services regularly.
  • Participate in faculty committee work and complete required assessment activities, including submitting requested reports to the Academic Outcomes Assessment Committee.
  • Submit an annual report to the department chair for English and Modern Languages and to the Dean of the College of Humanities, Education and Social & Behavioral Sciences.
  • Respond promptly and regularly to email communications from the department chair, the English program director, the dean, and students/advisee.
  • A masters degree in English, writing, or rhetoric is required. Progress toward or completion of terminal degree (MFA or PhD) expected for promotion and tenure.
  • Demonstrated success and enthusiasm for working with undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching a variety of undergraduate English courses, including first year composition, advanced writing, and literature electives.
  • A Christian faith perspective.
  • Commitment to student success and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Candidates should have belief in and commitment to Jesus Christ and the Christian faith as interpreted through the historic witness of the Bible and the ongoing ministry of the Holy Spirit. They should possess a vitality of Christian experience that is maturing in

insight and application. Candidates must meet University lifestyle expectations.
