What Your Job Will Be Like:

Jefferson Lab's SRF Science & Technology Department is committed to ensuring the reliable operation at the required energy output of the superconducting radio frequency (SRF) accelerator systems in CEBAF, delivering the relevant SRF scopes as part of the JLab’s responsibilities for the EIC project, and engaging the cutting-edge research efforts to enable future generations of SRF-based accelerators for fundamental research as well as broad industrial and societal applications.

As a Staff Scientist II/III, you will work on complex problems or projects of special importance to the laboratory and provide solutions that are innovative and ingenious. Focusing on the EIC project support in the development of SRF cavities and other components for the SRF systems. This position will be devoted to some of the cutting-edge SRF R&D within the SRF S&T Department in support of the Accelerator Division to advance SRF technologies for particle accelerators.

SS-II

In This Role, You Will:

  • Act as the lead scientist in development of a novel laser particulate counter, advise on its installation, and conduct its experimental tests after installation.
  • Interact with beam physicists and other RF physicists to understand the design requirements of the RF systems. Perform the RF design/analysis/simulation of the RF/SRF components including RF-beam interaction. Interact with designers and mechanical engineers to engage the thermal-mechanical design/analysis. Provide inputs for the cavity/component fabrication and tuning. Design apparatus and perform RF measurement and testing of the cavities and components.
  • Participate in new initiatives in novel SRF applications such as SRF TEM. Participate in new programs in development of advanced SRF solutions for future applications in energy and medical industries. Identify and pursue high-impact research that is foundational to improved performance, cost, and reliability of SRF-based accelerator systems. Contribute to continuing education of JLab staff regarding the multidisciplinary basis and evolving standards for designs and methods used for optimally effective SRF-based accelerator systems. Support workforce development by leveraging undergraduate and graduate student research projects as components of the above functions. Document results through tech notes, journal papers and conference papers.

SS-III

In This Role, You Will:

  • Perform the RF design/analysis/simulation of the RF/SRF components including RF-beam interaction.
  • Interact with designers and mechanical engineers to engage the thermal-mechanical design/analysis.
  • Provide inputs for the cavity/component fabrication and tuning.
  • Develop innovative algorithms and tools for high-reliability operation of SRF cavities subjected to wide range of beam loadings.
  • Participate or lead new initiatives in novel SRF applications such as SRF TEM.
  • Participate or lead new programs in development of advanced SRF solutions for future applications in energy and medical industries.
  • Identify and pursue high-impact research that is foundational to improved performance, cost, and reliability of SRF-based accelerator systems.
  • Contribute to continuing education of JLab staff regarding the multidisciplinary basis and evolving standards for designs and methods used for optimally effective SRF-based accelerator systems.
  • Support workforce development by leveraging undergraduate and graduate student research projects as components of the above functions.

Qualifications We Require:

SS-II

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering with a strong background in theoretical and experimental electromagnetism.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in the field of electromagnetic physics and engineering.
  • Experience in electromagnetic analysis and modeling of beam-loaded cavities.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Proven ability with analytical analysis of RF resonators and beam-cavity interactions and competence in electromagnetic simulation codes such as CST microwave studio. Experience in RF and particle simulation codes such as ACE3P, GPT is a plus.
  • Good understanding of the physics and engineering of RF cavities including thermal and mechanical physics and engineering. Some understanding of the SRF physics is highly desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with beam physicists and other RF physicists to understand the design requirements of the RF systems.
  • Ability to comprehend, formulate, and communicate highly abstract concepts.
  • Ability to express or exchange complex ideas by means of spoken and written communication.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data and develop models.

SE-III

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering with strong background in theoretical and experimental electromagnetism.

  • 10 years of experience in the field of electromagnetic physics and engineering.
  • Experience in electromagnetic analysis and modeling of beam-loaded cavities.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Good understanding of the physics and engineering of SRF/RF cavities including beam-cavity interaction, electromagnetism, thermal and mechanical physics and engineering.
  • Some understanding of the SRF physics is highly desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with beam physicists and other RF physicists to understand the design requirements of the RF systems.
  • Ability to comprehend, formulate, and communicate highly abstract concepts.
  • Ability to express or exchange complex ideas by means of spoken and written communication.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data and develop models.
  • Ability to traverse across various locations on the laboratory site and access work areas.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stoop, bend over and climb ladders.
  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods.
  • Visual capabilities sufficient to use computer workstations, read documents, and see safety signs.
